Car in driveway, got in, started engine, everything sounded normal. Put it in D and nothing happened, wouldn't move. Checked emergency brake, it was off. Tried R, same thing. Even with gas pedal fully depressed, no acceleration. Driveway on incline, put in N but both ps and pb disabled as car rolled. Ck engine light was on.

About hour later tried again, everything ok.Drove to shop, they said no codes were stored. Told me it wasn't limp mode because brakes and steering not affected by limp mode. Advised to bring it in if happens again.

Any ideas? Had this since new, never happened before.

Sounds like a drivetrain issue… Transmission? Torque converter? Don’t know your auto very well.

06 Fusion had a wrench icon on dash when in limp mode due to faulty throttle body, along with check engine. Power steering & brake functioned normally, IIRC. Car would not increase RPM above idle but tach would move with gas pedal. Stop, turn car off, restart, go along your merry way. No MIL, but had a stored code.

It would happen when car was hot, shut off, then temp/humidity change (usually quick rain), then started while still warm/hot. Happened 3-4 times, most common was on interstate, stop for lunch & have a quick rain roll through. Get back on interstate & 10-15 minutes later, it would kick into limp mode. Really fun at 85mph around ATL.

Limp mode is basically idle so you can stop/turn to get out of traffic without crashing. You can't 'disable' PS/PB, they run off engine, at least on that model. Newer can have electric PS & possibly doesn't need vacuum for brakes.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again & you can document.

Document in every way possible this problem even with mechanic/dealership or whoever -- paper/photos/videos/audio. If it cannot be fixed to your satisfaction to where you are totally comfortable with continuing to drive this vehicle then I would unload it asap if not sooner. ........................................... drill sgt.

Do you have a tach in it? Did the rpm’s go up when you tried stepping on the throttle? Might be a fly by wire throttle and it failed until you reset it by shutting off and restarting the vehicle.

I would start checking electrical grounds and battery cables. Corroded wiring can cause weird faults.

Also....what did your transmission dipstick tell you? These transmissions don't like being low on fluid.

I take my car to Koons, I know a lot of people don't like using dealership mechanics, but if you want to go that route. My service writer up there will take good care of you, and he came make some mean BBQ on a side note. You got my email if you want his name an introduction.

Can't help you on the limp mode, didn't even know they had that back then. Had a 2012 prior to my current one and did not.

Put some of grandpa's Viagra in the tank.

Should fix the limp mode for a couple hours at least

About 66k, car is used primarily for long road trips

Ford only put one engine in Expedition that year, 5.4 v8

My last 13 Mustang (the V6, not the 302) had the (poorly documented) wrench symbol as well, due to a damaged transmission cooler line. Apparently it was leaking ATF and dipped just below the threshold.

No wrench, no limp mode. Something else may be afoot, though.

If you drive for more than 4 hours, call a mechanic.

My 2008 expedition did that intermittently a long time ago, it ended up being the sensor on the fly by wire gas pedal. It would go in gear but no throttle at all.....
