what am i doing wrong?

It sounds like you are trying to start a ‘poll’ and not a traditional thread.

Since you have started a few threads including this one, I think Ronin is right and you must have accidentally started a “Poll” instead of a thread.

Are there more restrictions to starting a Poll than for starting a Post? Or is it just the logical next step in starting a Poll to have a question as the beginning?

Are you clicking "new" right under the small SIGforum.com high in the the upper left of the page? Then you get three choices. You want "discussion". Click on that. You should be good to go.

I have this happen a lot when starting a thread from my phone.

I think now it does. Didn’t need to be back when, but then folks always messed it up and now needs a notary.
