Daytime breaking and entering, homeowner caught him in the act. Badguy runs out.

Another officer found the suspect. Before any of us could get to her, the officer transmits that the bad guy was running.

All we could hear from there were broken radio transmissions, with screaming. We thought the worst. Went on for over a minute before I got there.

I bailed out and tackled badguy as he was running from the officer. Thank god it was just poor radio communication. My heart was in my knees until I saw she was ok.

I had a couple of tense conference calls and got it an email tiff with a marketing guy

My wife called for code-3 backup one time with a voice I had never heard before. I was 43 miles away and 155 MPH was not fast enough. Local PD and SO got there soon enough, thankfully.

I bet that was fun.

As for the law enforcement professionals, I am always amazed and appreciative of your work.
I have a few friends that are retired law enforcement (best friend from high school retired as a homicide detective in Broward County, FL), and another friend that is currently a lieutenant with the MNPD.
I'm shocked and overwhelmed at what LEO's have to deal with on a daily basis. And the fact that they tell stories like it's no big deal sometimes.

It's a pretty sobering experience to hear the word "Help" on the radio. Someone can ask for a second unit, or a third, or a fourth, or everyone in the county, but if they say that word--"Help"--you know shit is south.

Big difference between asking for help and asking for assistance. I can hear Trooper Mark Coates (murdered SCHP trooper) saying "Ridgeland R-21, I need help" if I close my eyes. That made as much or more of an impact on me than anything in the video itself.

One of the most helpless feelings I've ever heard was being on the radio when one of our officers was shot. I'll never forget hearing "Officer Down" screamed over the radio. Never.

Mine was almost 9 years ago. Thankfully, he survived, but is in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Caught a .45 to the neck. If the next man in the line wasn't a former Army medic, he'd have died on scene.

Heard that a lot in the fire department from the interior crews.
Most of the time it they were yelling because they were wearing an air mask. When the transmission would start your heart would stop till you could determine what the situation was.
In my years in the fire department thank god we never had any our our guys get trapped and need to be rescued but we were ready.

The other end of it is when the shooting starts, you call "shots fired" all the while, and your closest back up is a couple minutes away and it seems like hours.

Screaming on a radio is never good.

I recall as a probie, first time out in an Engine on a late night run I was in the Captains seat as I wasn't certified to drive the rigs yet. We were in a really old Engine where the siren speaker was on the roof right over your head. I grab the mic to call en route, and knowing I can barely hear myself think, I yell into the radio to be heard. Stories vary from waking everyone in the other stations to knocking the Batt Chief out of his chair. I received 'remedial training' on radio procedure shortly after that incident and heard about it for almost a year afterwards. Nothing like having everyone yell at you at the top of their lungs to get the point across.

The thing you never want to hear on the radio is that one person who no matter how bad it is speaks in a calm, monotone, even voice.... yelling/screaming.

How about being the one calling for help and the dispatcher tells you to stand by. Dispatcher later told me she didn't hear any stress in my voice and "code 3" didn't set in. All I was doing was initiating a pursuit, but when someone says code 3 over the air, folks stop talking and listen. It was my squad mate who alerted her to my call. Dispatcher told me next time I needed to sound like a rookie.
