The one in the middle, I didn't even need to finish watching the video.

I knew when they introduced them at the start. Boyington was a stocky, scrappy former boxer before he joined the Marines.

The man who stood up at the end of the game to be recognized when the correct Pappy Boyington was announced.

Same here. Pappy Boyington was a short stocky man with dark hair at that time.
He served as a consultant on the Baa Baa Black Sheep/ Black Sheep Squadron TV series, although several of his actual squadron mates took exception in the way they were portrayed in the series and held a grudge against him, although I'm not sure if it was his idea to supercharge their bad boy image or if, in his role has consultant, he protested and was overruled by the producers or director.

Well, that and as a former Marine pilot myself I tend to know those who went before me.

I recognized Boyington too. I have to admit though that I didn’t know he was a POW of the Japanese for two years; he’s fortunate to have survived the War.

By the way, I have a signed copy of 'Bye, Bye, Blacksheep', written by Masajiro "Mike" Kawato, the pilot who shot down Boyington.

I had the pleasure of visiting with Boyington at several air shows in SoCal starting in 1984. He sold autographed copies of his book.
I have one artwork signed by Pappy and the Japanese pilot who shot him down.

The ONLY reason the Marines gave him the Medal of Honor is because they thought he was dead. Nobody knew he was alive until the end of the war, I believe.
He was a great warrior, but not a roll model for other Marines. He was a self-proclaimed drunk who couldn't even stay sober in the POW camp. He stole sake during kitchen duty for a Japanese new year celebration. Had the Japanese caught him, they would have executed him on the spot. Fortunately, the other prisoners covered for him.
He was a great combat pilot and even a great leader, but he certainly had his personal problems. There is no place in a peace-time military for people like him.
