Facebook is experiencing a major outage today. Somebody must have posted the truth. Did the Russians do it?

PASigI know my own personal productivity and happiness level went up once I ditched that POS app from hell in January and never looked back.
And I was a heavy FB user too since 2007

1967GoatHow funny. I ditched my FB account just after the election last year. However, my son is in football this year and the coach posts game video in a FB Group. My wife created a FB account so we can view the videos.
Today is like the 5th time I've going to FB this year (5 games), and I thought there was a problem with my connection/VPN. I rebooted my machine, tried 2 different browsers... I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on!

kr350psdI wonder if Facebook was on the list of things dementia Joe told the Russians not to hack.

radiomanI heard (from a perhaps unreliable source) that their DNS listing went away. i.e. didn't get renewed.
is there someone at FB right now going, "Oh crap, was that renewal due today?"

fiasconvaSome kind of scandal involving a whistleblower on the major news networks this morning. Maybe this is the cause. A little CYA maybe?

Can't believe everything you read on the 'net

$ whois facebook.com
Domain Name: FACEBOOK.COM
Registry Domain ID: 2320948_DOMAIN_COM-VRSN
Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.registrarsafe.com
Registrar URL: http://www.registrarsafe.com
Updated Date: 2021-09-22T19:33:41Z

They appear to run their own DNS servers:
Name Server: A.NS.FACEBOOK.COM
Name Server: B.NS.FACEBOOK.COM
Name Server: C.NS.FACEBOOK.COM
Name Server: D.NS.FACEBOOK.COM
so nothing there would "expire."
What's really weird is one would
assume one or more of their four DNS servers would be on widely-separated networks with completely different backbone connectivity, and with each having redundant backbone connectivity.
Yet DNS queries for "facebook.com" time out, indicating none of them are reachable.

Or the result. I heard that on the radio this morning too. Too much of a coincidence for this to be unrelated to it. My roommate will be devastated, she lives for FB. Well, that and Netflix.

ensigmaticFor the computer and networking tech geeks on SF: Current scuttlebutt suggests it's a BGP issue.
If FB's routes disappeared from the BGP routing tables for some reason,
all their Internet connectivity, regardless of how how widely-separated were their data centers, would simply go away.
Ok, confirmed:
quote:
<geek_friend> all their prefixes were withdrawn via BGP right before the dns stuff blew up
<me> So they were effectively disconnected from the Internet
<geek_friend> yup
<me> Yikes!
<me> Hack?
<geek_friend> doubtful
<me> Screwup?
<geek_friend> yeah most likely
BGP, so the non-geeks can kind of follow along, is Border Gateway Protocol. Essentially the routing protocol between major network nodes.
If your BGP route prefixes disappear: You're still there, but the Internet doesn't know how to get to you. It'd be as if somebody was trying to get to your house for the first time and all the major route street signs were removed.

I know absolutely nothing about computers.
I read reports in the other thread about company phones not working, as well as other security measures not working. I'm not so sure those issues would be related to what you are describing.
Take the access control for example. These are certainly controlled by a "computer", but not some server farm located off site. This is generally on site, and accessible via an internet connection from off site. So although features of the system may have stopped working, it shouldn't have completely stopped working.
So what else is going on here?

Their phones are almost certainly IP phones. Same network connectivity as everything else.

The evidence would suggest they are.

Explained in subsequent post. It isn't their DNS or their domain registrations. It's an Internet backbone routing issue.
