Violent crime comes to previously peaceful and safe Martha’s Vineyard. And guess why?
By Peter Barry Chowka

The previously unimaginable has happened: The storybook island of Martha’s Vineyard, the seasonal home of billionaires and hundreds of elite cultural and political movers and shakers, not to mention one of three year-round homes of the Obamas, has finally experienced that rarity previously limited to the mainland: violent gun crime. And surprise: The alleged perpetrators are not MAGA white nationalists. Rather, evidence so far points to migrants, possibly of the illegal kind.
This is a bitter pill for most Vineyard residents to swallow. The island’s six towns have all declared themselves to be sanctuary communities. Last September, the island rallied (a.k.a. virtue signaled) around fifty illegal migrants who were flown there at the direction of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis – before they were bussed and ferried off the island less than two days later.
A violent wake-up call
Last Thursday, November 17, minutes after it opened for the day, a small bank in the island town of Vineyard Haven was invaded by three armed masked men. They threatened, subdued and duct taped the employees and proceeded to make off in a stolen car with an undetermined amount of cash – after brandishing semiautomatic handguns to intimidate the bank personnel.

In the article it states that the island shut down. No schools, no business, just fear. There is an ancient saying "Whatever you undertake, consider what happens next." I guess they missed that one.

Keep shipping them illegals to Martha's Vineyard! In fact, increase it by an order of magnitude - I'm certain there's still no lack of bodies.

Suspect in 'the aftermath' arraigned in connection to Martha's Vineyard robbery getaway

Zane Razzaq

EDGARTOWN ― A man accused of helping armed thieves who robbed a bank on Martha's Vineyard last week escape was arraigned at Edgartown District Court on Monday morning.

Miquel Anthonio Jones, 30, was charged with accessory after the fact. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

"Based on the evidence that we have now, there's probable cause at least to show that Mr. Jones was involved in the aftermath of the robbery getaway," said assistant district attorney Michael Giardino in court.

Defense attorney Casey Dobel, who represented Jones in court, said the Commonwealth's argument "is, at best, a circumstantial case."

"I understand that because of the nature of this case and the small town nature of Martha's Vineyard that people are looking for someone to blame. Mr. Jones is not that person," said Dobel.

Hon. Judge Benjamin Barnes set bail at $300,000. Jones must obey an 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. curfew and wear a GPS tracking device if he makes bail.

What police say happened durign the bank robbery at 257 Edgartown Road?
On Thursday around 8:15 a.m., three people wearing all black or dark clothing forced their way into the Rockland Trust Bank. The bank is located at 257 Edgartown Rd. in the Vineyard Haven community of Tisbury.

The robbers were armed with semi-automatic handguns, according to Giardino, and bank employees were bound with duct tape and plastic restraints.

The robbers fled in a vehicle stolen from one of the tellers. They then drove the stolen car to the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest next to Martha's Vineyard Airport, where they abandoned it at 8:29 a.m.

Surveillance video shows a dark blue 2007 Honda Elantra with a missing driver’s side rear hubcap leaving the parking lot moments after, said Giardino.

"Through investigative measures, which included speaking with witnesses and observing surveillance video from multiple sources, it was determined the 2007 Honda Elantra was likely involved in the robbery," said Giardino.

On Friday, police found the Honda, with Jones behind the wheel. He admitted to being in possession of the car for the past five weeks and to being in the parking lot where the employee's car was abandoned at approximately 8:20 a.m. the day of the robbery.

Giardino described Jones as evasive during questioning and said investigators saw a "green vegetation-like substance" on his shoes, saying it appeared similar to material found in the abandoned employee's vehicles.

Ultimately, a search warrant was executed for Jones' 2007 Honda Elantra. Investigators found three $100 bills, two of which display sequential serial numbers. Giardino said $100 bills were "among the denominations stolen during the robbery."

They also found one pair of white Nike sneakers and dark clothing similar to the clothing and items worn by the perpetrators, said Giardino.

He was arrested on Saturday.

Dobel called Jones "extremely motivated to fight what is at this time a very weak case against him."

Jones has come to Martha's Vineyard every year for at least five months since 2016, she said. He raises money to support his three children, who he cares for in Jamaica, she said.

he called him an "incredibly involved father" who coaches youth soccer, used to be a professional soccer player for Jamaica, and has no criminal record "here, Jamaica, anywhere." While on Martha's Vineyard, he works "seven days a week," she said.

"This is not somebody who is in any way shape or form a danger to the community and at the time, there are no allegations that he did anything except possibly help some people after the fact. There's no allegations that he was present at Rockland trust on that on the morning of November 7," said Dobel.

As the investigation unfolds, Giardino said additional charges for Jones are possible.

"At this point, the investigation does continue and is ongoing. Police are making efforts to continue to identify and locate the other people involved as perpetrators," said Giardino.

A probable cause hearing is set for Dec. 16.

Martha's Vineyard bank robbery suspect arrested. What the FBI found in phone records

Rachael Devaney
Cape Cod Times
Dec 14, 2022

BOSTON – A third individual has been charged and arrested in connection with an armed bank robbery on Martha’s Vineyard on Nov. 17.

Romane Andre Clayton, 21, of Jamaica, was arrested on Dec. 9 in Connecticut and charged on Dec. 12 with one count of being an accessory after the fact to armed bank robbery, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Clayton will appear in federal court in Boston at a later date.

The charge of being an accessory after the fact provides for a sentence of up to 150 months in prison, five years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000.

Two others already charged in state and federal court

Two co-defendants, Miquel A. Jones, 39 and Omar Odion Johnson, 30, were previously charged on Dec. 1 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston. They remain in state custody, according to the Department of Justice. Both have pleaded not guilty in state court to armed robbery and conspiracy,On Thursday, Nov. 17, around 8:15 a.m., the Rockland Trust bank in Vineyard Haven was robbed at gunpoint by three people, police said. According to police, robbers wearing dark clothing and masks that looked like an elderly man with exaggerated facial features entered through the back of the bank and were armed with semi-automatic weapons. They forced a teller to open a vault at gunpoint, stealing $39,100. They also tied up employees with plastic ties and duct tape.

Johnson's bail was set at $300,000 with the condition that he must wear a GPS tracking device and, if released, stay away from the bank, according to the clerk’s office. For Jones, bail was also set at $300,000, and he must wear a GPS tracking device, stay away from the bank, and maintain an 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. curfew if released, according to the clerk’s office.

FBI: Clayton appears on Steamship Authority video surveillance

According to an affidavit by Daniel P. Conlon, a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, surveillance video obtained from the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority ferry terminal in Vineyard Haven, shows Clayton arriving Nov. 17 at a parking lot near the ferry terminal in a silver sedan. After purchasing ferry tickets, Clayton is seen boarding a ferry at 9:21 a.m.

About 30 minutes later, Johnson is seen on video arriving at the same parking lot and getting into the driver’s seat of the silver sedan Clayton previously parked, according to the affidavit. Johnson is later seen on the video driving the silver sedan to the vehicle reservation clerk booth, purchasing a vehicle ferry ticket and boarding a freight ferry in the silver sedan at 12:24 p.m., according to the affidavit.

Clayton was present during Johnson's arrest in Connecticut, police say

On Friday, Nov. 25, at about 8:20 p.m., Johnson was arrested on a state warrant in New Haven, Connecticut. At the time of the arrest, Clayton was present in the vehicle, according to Conlon's affidavit.

Clayton wasn't arrested and was told he was free to leave. At that time, Clayton agreed to speak with law enforcement at the New Haven Police station. At the station, Clayton gave conflicting accounts of his whereabouts during the time of the bank robbery, and denied any involvement in the robbery of the Rockland Trust bank, according to the affidavit.

Analysis of phone records indicate Clayton's proximity to Martha's Vineyard days before robbery, according to FBI
During the interview, according to Conlon, phone records revealed that a phone device associated with Clayton was used on Martha's Vineyard, Falmouth, and surrounding areas between Oct. 13 and Nov. 16.

On Nov. 16, Clayton exchanged five phone calls with Jones' telephone number throughout the day. All calls occurred through the cell site located at 90 Alpine Avenue, Oaks Bluffs, according to the affidavit.

Data also indicates that on Nov. 17, the first call in Clayton's cell phone records show an outbound call at 9:58 a.m. through a cell site on Dump Road, which is approximately 400 yards west of the crime scene, the affidavit states.

About 26 minutes after that call, Clayton's cell phone received a call from Johnson's cell phone number, which lasted 18 seconds, using a cell site in Woods Hole, according to the affidavit. The ferry from Martha's Vineyard docks at Woods Hole.

Cell phone data showed that two defendants traveled to a Tisbury farm, according to FBI

Conlon said cell phone data collected from Johnson and Jones' phones demonstrates that after the robbery, Jones and Johnson traveled to a Tisbury farm, where law enforcement discovered burned clothing and equipment, in addition to two buried handguns. According to the affidavit document, Jones worked for a landscaping company that used the farm.

Cellphone data also revealed that Jones' phone was close to the bank the night before the robbery.

Based on the surveillance video, and cell phone analysis, Conlon said in the affidavit there's probable cause to believe that Clayton knew that Johnson and Jones committed the armed bank robbery, and subsequently received, relieved, comforted or assisted Jones and Johnson in order to hinder and prevent their apprehension, trial, or punishment for the crime of armed bank robbery.
