Hong Kong protesters beg Trump to ‘liberate’ city

By Mark MooreSeptember 8, 2019

Thousands of protesters in Hong Kong on Sunday chanted the US national anthem and called on President Trump to “liberate” the Chinese-ruled city.

The throngs, wearing black shirts and masks, waved American flags, carried posters that read, “President Trump, please liberate Hong Kong” and sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” as they marched to the US Consulate under the watchful eyes of riot police.

“Hong Kong is at the forefront of the battle against the totalitarian regime of China,” Panzer Chan, one of the organizers of the march, told the Associated Press. “Please support us in our fight.”

Defense Secretary Mark Esper counseled Beijing to use “restraint” in its dealing with Hong Kong, a British colony that was returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

“We would obviously urge restraint and not to act, and to sit down and talk with the protesters and resolve the differences,” Esper said at a press conference in Paris on Saturday.

The Sunday protests began peacefully but later turned violent when police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds that converged on the city’s Central District, where banks, jewelry stores and high-end clothing shops are located.

The demonstrators smashed windows, vandalized a subway station, ignited fires in the street and put up barricades.

The city has been in a state of turmoil throughout the summer prompted by an extradition bill that would have allowed suspects in semi-autonomous Hong Kong be sent to mainland China to face trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party.

Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam last week said she was formally withdrawing the bill, but it did little to discourage the protests that have since turned into calls for more democratic reforms.

“Liberating” Hong Kong with the US military on top of the tariffs we’re imposing on China would be tantamount to declaring war. In other words, that’s a hard no from me.

The US Military is for wars directly necessary to the security of the US. There should be a clear purpose and goal that can not be achieved through other means.

We should not be sending this nations service members into other countries to fix their problems, improve their political methods, instill western values, quell their internal uprisings, or “keep the peace” via extended occupation.

We have effectively spent nearly 30 years in Iraq and Afghanistan with no clear purpose or military goal that the troops are able or allowed to achieve, defining “victory” and ending our involvement.

These people are in the technological age and yet CHOOSE to live under tribal systems and in conditions more reminiscent of the Stone Age.

Either kill and destroy the enemy, or let them sort their shit out on their own without using the US Military as enforcers of political policy.

Same goes for Hong Kong, Venezuela, and any other country that isn’t happy with their fate and isn’t willing to risk their own to fix it, instead thinking Sugar Daddy US should come take care of it for them. Fuck you, you’re on your own we have our own shit to deal with.

Sounds like doctored news to me.

The Chinese have been running a disinformation campaign since nearly the start of this mess, with tweaked and falsified footage showing that the United States and the UK are the instigators.

Throughout much of the Chinese coverage of these events, their home reporting has focused on a false narrative that the protestors are calling on the US, and that the protestors are tied to the US, or even favorable to the US (none of which are true). Likewise for the UK.

It's known that both the HKPD and Chines government have installed a number of shills in the crowds, dressed and acting with the protestors, for intel, to spread discord, and for propaganda. This is most likely more of the same: recirculation of Chinese propaganda. Repeating it, believing it is doing nothing more than acting in the service of the Chinese government.

That's not really a good thing, no matter how you slice it.

This is a Chinese problem. Much as they'd like to pawn it off abroad or at least pawn the blame abroad to lessen the blowback on them, it remains a Chinese problem.

There's nothing to "liberate."

That would be a war we would handedly lose, nor have the stomach for after 20 years of war in the Middle East.

Tragic situation but not our monkeys and not our circus.

Let Taiwan and the Brits figure it out.

We don’t have enough Marines to declare war against China.

During my 2 MEU(SOC) deployments with the Marines, we stopped off at Hong Kong both times. Very pretty city. Memories aside, it's simply not our fight.

The thread had me thinking about one of my favorite movies though:

I say No. Both Taiwan and Hong Kong strongly desire to remain democratic (little "d") without interference from mainland China, but it is not our place to insure that. (Except, of course, we do have a mutual defense treaty with Taiwan.)

Guessing you mean the same Hong Kong that celebrated in the streets when they were no longer subject to British rule?

This author is attempting to take a segment of the protests and interpret it into something that it is not. Yes, there's protestors with US flags, holding placards of US power and the 2A, even playing the US national anthem....what those protestors are saying is they want autonomy to keep Hong Kong the way it's always been. Trying to tell China, things are fine as they are, knock-off the power-grabs and we'll continue to be prosperous, mercantile & financial hub.

They all know there's no way in hell they could ever go back to being a British colony or, even US military intervention. To do so, would invite a catastrophic war and turn Hong Kong into the cities of 1930's & 40's Asia, shattered, destroyed and annihilated.
