This has been floating around online for the past week or so.

https://www.outdoorhub.com/new...n-kill-online-buyer/

The whole ordeal has gained quite a bit of attention on Facebook, racking up nearly 5,000 shares and well over 1,000 comments of people weighing in on what may have occurred here. Scrolling through the comments, it appears to be a mixed bag of people on alert and downplaying skeptics.

One user even suggested the bullet was placed by an anti-gun advocate trying to murder a gun owner.

While that last part may never be confirmed, this is a great example of why you should always inspect your guns before firing them – especially if you purchased it online!

Text from original posting:

A bad prank, a booby trap, or a strange set of circumstances? These photos are of a shotgun purchased online and shipped to a dealer in VA. The BATFE was notified when it was realized the receiver was modified to hold a pistol round aimed at the person firing the weapon. The weapon was loaded with a .380 ACP round. The trigger group obscured the round until the weapon was broken down for inspection. When chambering the shell the weapon would be cycled with the slide action bar coming into contact with the primer on the pistol round pointed at the shooter. It had marks from being struck but the round did not discharge. Had it fired it was aligned with the top of the pistol grip stock and would have possibly struck the shooter in the face. This is obscure but still a little scary.

Here's a photo showing how the action bar would impact the primer with the slide fully retracted. If the action was worked forcefully enough, the pistol round could have fired.

I wouldn't care to speculate, and it would be nothing more than that based on two photos.

It seems this was deliberate. But trying to guess why or who was the intended victim (if there was an intended victim) seems almost impossible without more.

Not that that will stop anyone. So here is my offer:

A mystery karma for the best theory posted here. It'll be something nice-ish. Nothing crazy valuable, but something you'd want. I'll be the sole judge of what the best theory is. Rational, irrational, credible, fantastic - all comers are welcome. Extra consideration for photos, citations, or supporting material.

If you want to play, say "I'm in" at the start of your post. If you don't do that, you won't be in the running, and I'll figure you are a no-reading, wild speculator. I'll let it run while there interest in the thread.

Was the pistol round extracted? Was it intact and live? How was it seated, in a "barrel" or simply in a hollowed out portion of the receiver and stock. Very curious.....

The original owner of the shotgun, being an older fella and having been the victim of a few burglary gun thefts, machined that shotgun as a booby trap.
His thinking was that a thief would steal it and on the first shot out of his new stolen booty would get shot in the face and pay the price.
Since he was older, he soon succumbed to an illness and died. His family didn't know about the booby-trapped shotgun and sold it off with the rest of his valuables.

That's a "this is mine and nobody but me knows how to use it because of this one little trick" gun. You know, like Biff Tannen's car. Owner was a Bubba, first and foremost, or he wouldn't have done this. I'm guessing Bubba's brother, Delmar, used to like to skin off with his 870, blast all day and stick it back in the gun cabinet dirty. A .380 might not kill him, but it'll teach him to quit fuckin' with someone else's getter. Of course, being a prolific reloader, Bubba worked up some ideal overcharge loads with hard primers, practicing on brass loaded with said hard primers until he had just the right feel for cycling it without short-shucking it or "oh fuck"ing it before he installed the main charge.

And so the back of the case would likely have just blown out without any rear support.

The amount of machining effort to create this "booby trap" would have left mountains of evidence and implicated specific people with that degree of skill. It would be much easier to just go shoot the intended victim and throw the rifle in a deep river!

What if there was no ill intent, just sheer coincidence?

(Keep in mind that the hole in the rear of that shotgun receiver is there from the factory... It isn't a modification.)

The prior owner was an amateur gunsmith. He had the shotgun fully disassembled, and he shoved the parts in a bag/case/box along with a bunch of other gun parts and random leftover bits of ammo. As the container got shuffled around for months, a loose .380 round - through sheer happenstance - managed to find its way into the hole at the rear of the disassembled receiver. The shadetree smith finally found a little bit of free time, unpacked the pile o' parts, and reassembled the shotgun in a bit of a hurry. It sat in his safe for a few years before he ended up selling it off when he needed to generate some spare cash, and he had no idea of the dangerous situation that had been created.

Ok here goes; suicide attempt made to look like a major malfunction so the family could sue the manufacturer. Evidence may be destroyed in the "explosion" - but it didn't work so the individual succeeded another way and no one new about the modification.

This is clearly the work of the CIA. Based on an old concept someone found in a dusty copy of an OSS notebook, this modified shotgun was manufactured as a proof of concept prototype. The original plan was to produce the operational version as an exact replica of Castro's favorite birding gun. Before the mission could be carried out, Kennedy green-lighted the Bay of Pigs fiasco instead.

The gun would later be inventoried by a clerk who had no idea what it was and provided to none other than Eugene Hasenfus, who carried it in his C-123. It fell into Sandinista hands and eventually, over the course of several decades, managed to get passed/stolen/traded from person to person until it found its way back into the US in the hands of a coyote.

Said coyote was picked up by CBP, but not before a brief chase, during which the shotgun was dropped and subsequently picked up by one of his passengers, who was able to evade capture under the cover of dark and sold the gun to buy food and clothes as soon as he got into town.

It's a story that defies the odds, but no more so than the obvious fact that in all that time, it was never fired.

I find that quite odd. Clearly the person who made the modification had the ability to disassemble the shotgun, modify the receiver, and do so in a manner that was not easily seen.

However, they somehow failed to understand the difference in size between a firing pin designed to ignite a primer and the action bar, which is clearly not. Just from the pictures it appears that the action bar is too large, too rounded, and too far off set to successfully ignite the primer.

I am not sure if it would have shot the user in the face unless there is a hole drilled in the stock. However simply having a live round fire inside the receiver could definitely make for a bad day.

It was a booby trap.

The trap setter had past problems with thieves. Knowing the weapon would be stolen if left in a certain local, it was hoped to revenge the theft. In the end, either the trap setter forgot about the trap and sold the weapon or; the weapon was stolen and subsequently sold without being fired.

------------------------------------------------------
quote:
"I told you that if I told you I'd have to kill you. I didn't tell you how I'd kill you." That was the last thing I said to George.

I encountered several Black Swan events that have exposed my plan to kill George.

First, it was a masterful plan, booby trapping his shotgun with a .380 case. Who would have expected that?

But his untimely death in the eagle attack rendered the issue moot. How many people have died eagle attacks in the 21st century? One. Him. It was from this Black Swan event the plan unraveled.

I decided it was more of a problem to retrieve the booby trapped gun that it was worth. I decided it would be easier to purchase it at George's estate. I had not counted on an ardent collector of pump action shotguns discovering this particular shotgun belonged to none other than Vice President Dick Cheney, and it being the very shotgun with which he shot Harry Whittington. Suddenly everyone wanted the medical marvel shotgun that you can use to find a lawyer's heart. I was forced to drop out of the auction when bids exceeded $3.5M. This was Black Swan event two.

So I had to find a way to steal the shotgun, remove the evidence of tampering, and replace it without being discovered. I contacted a guy known as The Night, who knows his way around pump action shotguns, but he turned the job down. So I was forced to hire a guy The Night recommended, a guy who goes by WMS. WMS was a man of medium height, painfully skinny, with a scarred face like a drug user with bad acne or early stage tissue necrosis. He could not sit down; it was as if his butt hurt too bad or something. And whenever he bent over, he made an awful and wholly involuntary squealing sound, kind of like, well, a pig. He also had no tolerance for things flopping or jiggling around. The Jello I had at lunch sent him into near-total catatonia for three hours.

Well WMS broke in, and wouldn't you know it? The jewelry store owner who bought the shotgun got the drop on him and blew six fist-sized holes in the man. Gotta say, those 12 gauge slugs are damn effective. Suffice to say the police responded to the report of shots fired. Pulling to a stop in the no parking lane and fire lanes, the cops came into the store droves. There were dozens of them. Of course the shotgun was taken as evidence in a homicide, even though it was clear that the shop owner would not face charges. If I had only thought to be there in a police uniform, I could have taken the booby trapped one and replaced it with another of the same model. It was during the forensic ballistics testing the next day that the hidden .380 was discovered, and the police and everyone else is trying to figure who did it and why. It was the third Black Swan inside a month. That just ain't supposed to happen. Right?

Well, I should be in the clear, but you never know; my boss demanded to know if I'd been smoking dope! Three Black Swans inside a month? Seems like a cursed op. Well, I've got to get on a plane back - my boss has a job for me in Arizona redirecting F-16s down in Arizona. I leave in

The above journal entry, shown here and on our website for the first time, was the last entry. The writer, killed in the midst of typing, was hit by a man-made microcomet that escaped from the Large Hardon Collider in Switzerland. There is ongoing debate as to whether it came in a ballistic arc from space or though the plant itself. Authorities say he never knew what hit him, though this journal entry seems to suggest he had an idea that he was in ever deepening trouble. There was also one email that showed up in the victim's inbox which said simply "BANNED."

The Federal government is utterly baffled by these events. In addition to denying responsibility, they are mandating the public report anything and everything they saw or heard, ever. The toll free lines set up by HHS are swamped, and web traffic is so bad the website keeps crashing.

This is Brian Williams, reporting from Mentone, Texas.

Based on the fine Norky workmanship that provides many moments of use, this was likely smuggled out of North Korean. Dear Leader would invite his top personal threats to a 야생 거위 추격전 hunt with him, which translates to "Wild Goose Chase" and proffer these types of shotguns. When the appropriate fowl was stirred up, the actual targets fellow hunters with Kim would sight the bird, pull the trigger and remove themselves from Northern politics. Kim does love Ambrose Bierce's definition of "Kill" from The Devil's Dictionary : to create a vacancy without nominating a successor.
