My mother was in zombie mode for some months after my father passed and a number of people came over "to help" and picked through everything. All the fishing gear I grew up using is gone, just given away. That really stung. The Winchester Super X he bought when he first moved to El Paso in the early 70's is also missing. I'm sure other stuff is missing. I guess that's just what happens when someone dies - the vultures swoop in and that's that. The garage is in such a state of disarray that it'll realistically take more time to sort through what's there than I have for this trip. Mom wants me to help her load a bunch of stuff up for a dump run. I think I'm going to need to go back in the spring for a few weeks at least to help her prepare an estate sale.

Anyone have any interest in a vintage mechanical pinball machine from the golden era? It's a Gottlieb "Jacks Open." It's all there, could use some paint and electrical work, though. It can be set for either coin op or free play. I don't have the room or the inclination. Not my video, but this is the same machine here:

Another friend said "stop and visit," so I'm going through Columbus at least. If there's enough to pack the truck full, I'll bury the shotguns and the ammo in the front of the box and just keep headed west through Illinois.

Those mechanical pinball machines bring back memories, all the sounds emitting from them! Takes me back!.

Watch the weather reports if you take 44 and 40 through Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. Winter storms can get ugly along those routes. I lived in Southern New Mexico during the 80’s and we would be clear and dry while up there along that route the SHTF.

That's about the perfect way to put it. There's exactly no ideas coming out of that state that have any business being proliferated on a national level.

They're a hoot! I logged many, many hours on this one in the mid 80's through the early 90's. It was neat to find a video of one in new condition being played. It'll be a shame if nobody wants to restore this one.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on the radar days in advance. I think I may have screwed myself with the timing on this one. Should have been there and on my way back already. I have a feeling I'm going to meet winter along the way.

Well, I got a good look at the garage. The short version is, I’m going to go through and set aside whatever hand tools will fit in the Nissan Rogue we rented, and then after I drop my wife and son at the airport, load it up with the hand tools, guns, and ammo, and drive that.

I’m going to help my mother get in contact with an estate sale company and have them liquidate all this stuff and she can do whatever she needs to do with the money. It’s just beyond my physical capabilities to deal with, and he didn’t take care of anything, so getting hurt over neglected stuff is questionable condition is not going to happen.

It’ll be a lot less stressful without the truck, I’ll just be another guy on the road this way.

That is probably a good idea, you might google pinball machine collectors in the area, to get an idea of its value, someone local might snap it up.

I found several Pinball forums, you might find some info on it, to help with the sale and it's value on the open market. Found some info on it, Made in 77, $965 FOB, Link Jacks Open says $1570-$1830 value

If you go down through WV, stop in Clarksburg and pick up some pepperoni rolls Tomaros Bakery is a local go to, fresh first thing in the AM, not far off the interstate, grab a dozen of hot fresh ones, that will feed you well down the interstate towards Charleston...

Tomaros Bakery

Head through Lexington great place to stop and stay the night plenty of hotels off of Hwy 60 and 75/64 interchange and Hit the Bourbon Trail
or at least stop in Frankfort and hit Buffalo Trace for a tour, that will make more than a good conversation here on SF...

The company I sent the real estate tax auction link for does estate auctions as well, though I know nothing about the process. (that's not an endorsement, just passing along info)

Thanks for the links on the pinball machine. I’ll get a bunch of good pictures and register on that forum when I get back.

If I go through Kentucky, I’ll skip the distilleries, but good bbq is definitely a draw for me. Thanks!

Cas, I’ll look closer at that company. I noticed the property auctions are run at the place we had lunch yesterday, so I’m pretty sure the guy up the street from us either runs that company or at least has something to do with it (his restaurant and many other businesses and properties).

If you follow the link back to the main page, you'll see they do the tax auction for many counties, auctions for a bunch of municipalities and school districts, closed businesses, self storage places, and estate sales. Occasionally a large gun collection or gun store contents.

NY, CT and maybe elsewhere.

Sounds like a good call, and your trip just got a lot more fun! Hope you get a chance to see some cool stuff on your way West, and make some good memories. Drive safe!

Ammo.

All service calibers, plus some 12ga and 20ga sport loads. Guns are packed and ready to load up. Haven’t even touched the tools yet, and my back is about done. Running behind schedule a bit; I was hoping to be done by now. Taking a break, gonna have some dinner and then tuck into the tools and see what I can get loaded before dark, finish up in the morning and get on the road to PA.

Thanks, 92FSTech! Was a beautiful drive up from Albany this morning. Much more orange and red on the trees and I’ve been enjoying the flights of Canada geese all day.

As a retired Commercial Truck Driver who worked for Budget Truck Rental and was also an over the road driver for PODS, I would recommend PODS hands down. This time of year the rates come down and you just cannot beat the convenience of Pods. I never heard of anything being stolen from a Pods once it was in our hand. The Pods are placed door to door on the truck and in the warehouse so almost impossible to break in. Rental trucks break down and I have seen more in wrecks than I can count. I had customers get in wrecks in my lot with them when I was renting them. You can take your time loading them instead of rushing to get a rental truck loaded unloaded and returned. You tell them when to deliver empty Pod, when you are done they come pick it up, and you tell them when and where to deliver. If anything comes up it sits secure in the warehouse until you are ready. Remember all though a rental truck seems cheap you still need to figure in fuel costs. As to routes get down to I-40 and head west, Amarillo, Albuquerque and Gallup you start seeing snow this time of year but no real mountains to speak of.

Ok, last night before the last day’s drive. Time to make a decision: I40, or I25 down to Hatch, then Las Cruces, and I10 back?

Sight-seeing quickly fell by the wayside. I haven’t been pushing myself too hard, 8-10 hours a day, but any appetite for getting out and exploring was lost on the first day. I spent some time visiting with a few friends, and stopped and spent a few hours at Dr Bob’s house in Akron. Had a cup of coffee in the man’s kitchen. If you know, you know. Other than that, which seemed necessary, I’ve been just going steady progress.

The minivan is overloaded. I’ll make it to Mesa, I have little doubt, but it does not like to stop in a hurry, and it does not like quick turns. I felt it starting to get away from me on one of the curvy exits here in Albuquerque and I about shit diamonds. I would like to void curvy, windy, mountainous stuff, and I think that means I40 is a nope. That means not seeing Payson and the petrified forest, but if I go I10, I get to see Texas Canyon per OKCGene’s advice. It just adds a few hours. If that means not pulling into my driveway a shaking, nervous wreck, I reckon I’m ok with that.

If you go I25, take the Deming/Hatch shortcut, no need to go to las Cruces.

There is a rest area at Texas Canyon, worth the stop.

Funny that you mention that, drive by it enough but never stopped, someday..

Once he drops off of Texas Canyon, going to be going by Tombstone and an incredible amount of history in those sky island mountains.
