Yeah, the company has gone WAAAAAAAAAAAY down hill since I retired from there.

They were already bringing a lot of Indians and Paki's on board back then, but mostly here in the CONUS. But then started farming out production stuff to those countries. Quality went to shit in a hurry.

International is in the name. Why should IBM employ people in NY if a lot of their business is overseas? Also, when you consider how the U.S. has the highest corporate tax rate in the world, and then consider New York on top of that, I can see why they wouldn't employ Americans to do a job that can be done more cheaply elsewhere.

Obviously you have never dealt with remote support, not only IBM, seams a lot of companies have India for remote support,,,very very frustrating to deal with. Now also dealing with Bulgaria, a bit better..

I can't fault IBM for outsourcing. How else can they compete?

I fault this country's leaders for not compromising their political and personal agendas in favor of putting together a comprehensive strategy to address this issue.

This is on the order of a national defense in terms of our economic viability.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." A little perspective from a former employee. Hire in India if they want. However, way too many loyal older employees are kicked out for cheap labor. A year and a half or so, at 64 years of age with terrific appraisals every year, I was part of a RA (resource action) which just said see ya. I was lucky (sic) in that they knew I had prostate cancer, so I got a few extra months. When I came back, to get my meager severance, I had to train my 2 (two) replacements from India. Job did not go away, but we need two people to replace you. Anyway.....I guess I am ranting, so thanks for listening.

Maybe we should outsource the federal government to Indians if they can do the job that much cheaper.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Happened at work. They laid off 90% of staff. Sent jobs to India then brought H1B visas in. If companies keep this up we’ll all end up serving burgers.

My current employer tries their best to hire people in India first since they cost 20% that of one in the USA. Next choice is to hire an H1B visa holder from India as they will work for 30% less than a USA citizen. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

India is too expensive for IBM now. By the time I left, after almost 15 years, they were putting positions in places like Hungary and the Philippines. I doubt IBM would give a shit what Trump tweets.

Ah, the H!B, outsource IT to India, fun. I was H1B'd / India outsourced with my team mates, so that the company could save 750K per year. Yea, they are this desperate for profits.

Been watching this train wreck since 1991.

The only schadenfreude in it for me, is that 2 of the team also impacted are US citizen Indians. So Indians in India are now displacing Indian Indians in the U.S. There went my race discrimination retirement plan. Rats!

BTW - unmployment is vastly overrated. I get the max and due to my having 0 debt and paid off house, I can live on unemployment, minus big expenses like property taxes, house insurance, car insurance and stuff I need if something breaks like my fridge for example.

A person with rent and debt - unemployment won't even keep you above water. About equal to Social Security.

The real effects of the outsourcing for profits (and often for additional profits; the company outsourcing already makes profits) will be felt hard in 10 years in this country. Remember SS income for current retirees is also cut.

But, there'll be a major war soon. Globalization is beginning to turn. Read an interesting piece in the Economist months ago, about the previous 2 globalization runs in modern history.

1865 - 1914; WWI
1918 - 1939; WW II
1945 - XXX; WW III Protectionism has been on the upswing and will accelerate in the next 5 years.

At some point National Geo-Political interest will trump (pun?) the current Global Extreme Profit interest across National boundaries interest.

It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.

How about with quality? Customers will pay a premium for quality.

problem is they already charge the premium for India. The hourly rate charged to the customer is on par with what you would pay your local CPA or Attorney, but unlike IBM, their bills eventually stop

I wouldn't hire IBM to walk my dog.
Deeply unimpressed with my experience with them.

Their staff had the crappiest workstations for our project that we had to issue them our own and provide them with technical support and assistance on a project we were paying them for.

Staff learning the their own product on our dime.

Never again, nor would I ever endorse IBM for anything.

The old, old time IBM guys were customers. Watson 3rd, John Opel, Bill Grabe, Ed Lucente and a few more. Watsons bought a house on the island and all his top guys followed suit.
Wonderful people to work for, and every visit was an episode of goober goes to the city.

You have to look at IBM's customers and determine if they will pay a premium for quality. IBM's customers are businesses. For them, quality is defined by the contract. If you meet the terms of the contract, then that's quality. After that, the customer is interested in price.

How about US companies outsourcing call centers?

Comcast, for example.

I purchase WiFi hotspot time from Comcast/xfinity. Usually a 30 day block for $54.95.

Last few years when I had problems with the hotspot signal, I called an xfinity tech in Texas who quickly fixed the issue...sometimes giving me a partial refund to cover the frustration.

Now, the tech call center is the Philippines and good luck in trying to find someone who can speak something resembling English.

So, what I do now.....each time I get crappy service, I phone my CC company to reverse the $54.95 charge, which they do.

Some day....someone from Comcast will contact me to ask why I usually get a CC refund.

And boy, am I waiting to unload on that person.

If you ask them "Are you in the United States", they are incapable of giving a straight answer to this direct question. Never, not one single time, have I received a straight simple "yes" or "no" to this very basic, very easily understaood question.

I don't give a shit why they tap dance around this simple queston. All I know is that they do tap dance around it, as if their life depends upon defecting it or being as vague as possible.
