I read through this thread this morning. I thought it was a close call, and then went to make coffee. The pertinent facts kept buzzing around in my head.

The things that the kid considered important, the 'factory' and 'original' aspects, he has now told you these were what is important to him.

All those things were written in your description.

Any 'marks' or imperfections were either in the photos or were readily accessible upon physical inspection in a face to face transaction.

These are the things he considered important...and he failed on all counts to look at any of them, failed to read even your description. I guess he just figured the gun trade gods would see to his satisfaction by way of telepathy.

It is typical today to see clear evidence that someone, maybe someone who works under you, will not read. Some even say they won't read anything. As the saying goes, the man who doesn't read has no appreciable advantage over the man who can't read. I think if it's important to you, you read. Just pure lazy.

Noted above were all his excuses and mitigation, but not even a hint of 'I'm sorry, please excuse my BS'

Nope, nope and nope. I voted no. Now that I have thought about it, Hell no.

By the way, your karma is clean a whistle. It's his that has some dings.

This. 100%.

I was initially leaning towards “give the youngster a break”, but the tone of his message doesn’t indicate any humility on his part; in fact, it sounds more like entitlement.

He had every opportunity to inspect the weapon. If he needed someone to check it out for him, he should have made that arrangement with you. It’s too late now.

What if he had bought it at a gun shop ? Could he just return it for his money back ?
Everything was clearly disclosed. Maybe this is the lesson he need to start reading contracts that he will sign in his life. Likely just buyer's remorse on his end and wants a do over.
Your choice. No obligation. While he thinks he wants it original, he may appreciate the upgrades once he uses it.

Maybe you should gush over how well you like the trade and how disappointed you would be to trade back

When I sold my mobile home 40 years ago, I had people that wanted to live in it a few months to see if they really wanted to buy it.

Parent's house- they wanted me to rent it to them because they could not afford to buy it and their relatives would be living across the street.
People aren't shy. They just want different rules for their convenience

His continuing texts and can I have my rifle back? make me think there is something about that weapon. Was it a gift from dad? Was it special like the rifle used to harvest his first deer?

I would trade back on my terms (inspection, range test, whatever) or I would sell his rifle back to him by date certain. 30 days same as cash for $xxx, for example. You get money. He gets rifle. You let him figure out how to get his money. He can sell your old rifle. He can pimp his sister. The rifle is $xxx.

One issue here is personal safety. I would never trade at a residence. Only a range.

Been in this situation. Traded a Kimber 1911 for a Ruger M77 International. Was an even trade then but would definitely be in my favor now. The guy was unhappy with some minor condition of the barrel after he got home. Nothing that affected function and was barely noticeable. But I traded him back and sold the Kimber for cash which turned into a much more valuable gun in the end.

I wouldn't unless it was someone from a super closer circle of friends that I trust A LOT. Only if it was one of those friends that would go out of their way to help you with random things they don't have to. But offer to and just show up for it.

One of those types. But otherwise I'd consider it "all sells/trades are final".

No sense lying to him. Tell him straight to his face if the answer is no. He won’t learn anything if you tell him you can’t because you don’t have it anymore.

To answer a1abdj, not only would I demand a signed letter saying he had possession, I would also give him a signed letter saying the same of his rifle, and suggest he keeps it.

How many gun stores, pawn shops, FFL’s have a 3, 5, or 10 day “trial period” and accept firearm returns after the fact because you changed your mind?

Hell even if a new firearm is defective, most dealers will force you to deal with the manufacturers and still refuse a return.

He saw accurate pictures, read accurate description, inspected and accepted. Sorry, that deal is final as far as I am concerned and that is the exact explanation I would give him. Guns are one of those things that just aren’t “returnable” if you change your mind.

He can sell what he traded for and then buy what he wants.

That “review” thing on the local forum goes both ways. Give him a “bad” grade and explain exactly what he did and how he acted so other members of that forum are aware of how he handled the matter.

Yep. I suspect he's stomping around the house in an impotent rage. This could be a lesson for him, but I doubt he's ready to learn.

Based on all those, he's a fucking moron, and he has entitlement issues. Who could've seen that coming? Like I said twice already, he's about the right age to be learning this lesson if he's got the naivete to ask in the first place. Looks like it landed. Were it me, I'd leave neg feedback and "PM me for screenshots of all correspondence with this forum member" as an addendum to whatever else feels right.

Also, some of you are too nice. Then again, it's no secret here that I am, in fact, an asshole. I'd have a smile on my face when I took his rifle to the range and relish putting rounds through it, knowing he can't. Little shit.
