OF Rye is better than it should be, especially at its price point.

Being from Iowa Templeton is trash they got busted using flavor packets. They also had to change label because they were sourcing from MGP. That's the only reason they made a distillery in Iowa. It'll be another 6-7 years before a 10 year can be labeled from Iowa.

I've yet to have had a single individual to whom I introduced New Holland Artisan Distillery's Beer Barrel Rye that did not absolutely love it.

It is my favorite sipping whiskey, by far.

N.B.: They can't seem to decide on a name. Also known as "New Holland Artisan Spirits" and both without "Artisan": "New Holland Distillery," and "New Holland Spirits." Wonky branding, good Rye Smile

I like Old Overholt (Sometimes known as “Old Overcoat”). It’s not expensive. I found Sazerac to be good too.

Bulliet for lower price, Woodinville Distillery if I want to spend more. All in all most ryes are pretty good. As mentioned some are more like bourbon, hardly a bad thing. At worst some cheap ones might have a white lightning taste, also not the worst thing in my book. When the Woodinville distillery first opened, they actually sold an unaged white lightning, it was really good.

Give Pendleton 1910 a try. You’ll be glad you did. It’s been my sipping whiskey for years.
Here’s a review:

Not a fan of rye or black licorice flavor, but I do like Thomas H. Handy Sazcerac when I can find it.

Same with their bourbon. Delta recently made OF their free bourbon offering in the SkyClub and I love it. It replaced Jack Daniels, which I also like, but OF is way better IMO.

Thank you for all of the suggestions.
I am checking my local ABC to see what they have in some of the recommendations you have all mentioned.
Keep them coming.
Thanks

Another fan of Old Overholt. Priced right to use in cocktails. My favorite to use in a whisky sour. Summertime magic.

Avoid: Kooper's, Dad's Hat, Punjabi Club, Ri, Wiser's, Herman Marshall, Woodford, Col EHT BiB, Willet, KC Cask Strength, Dickel, the new one from Iowa.

The old standards are a good start; Old Overholt, and OO BiB, Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Sazerac, Rittenhouse BiB, Pikesville.

Redemption, OF, Winchester, Balcones, Bulleit, are drinkable. High West is okay. I never tried Templeton due to marketing fraud. The Redemption High Rye bourbon is good. James Pepper was less okay-ish. Ezra Brooks is MPG juice, it may be good.

If offered a free bottle, I would take Rittenhouse.

I personally don’t think rye has any more burn but it’s definitely spicier. I think rye is less likely to be aged as long as bourbon right now so that probably accounts for some of the burn that people describe. Having said that Whistlepig is the king of rye in my opinion. It’s delicious. I also like High West and Gunpowder rye as a less expensive alternative or for a rye old fashioned. I like Woodford’s rye as well but I’m not as much of a fan of knob creek’s rye even though I like their bourbon. Good luck and enjoy the journey.

I'm a bad person to ask in that I like it all. But I will note that the SanFrancisco competion has blind (as in unmarked so judges are rating a number, not a name, they don't know what it really is) It's worth perusing what the "experts" like. That doesn't always translate to what you might prefer, but it's a good place to start. Plenty of excellent product is not entered in that competition and it's possible that something noted upthread may taste better than the best SF rated product.

http://www.sfspiritscomp.com/results/search/

If you hunt down the Old Overholt noted upthread, you'll see that it got a GG (Double Gold means all judges gave it a gold) and sells for a modest $25. Appears to be an excellent choice to start with. The rest of the double golds have a few noted upthread as well. Whistle Pig, Salzerac of note. In Oregon, the Old Overholt is sold for $23.95, an excellent price for the product.

Yes. Yes it is. Tough to find, but worth the effort and worth the price, IMO. Fortunate to have a bit left in the bunker.

I also like Whistlepig 10yr, but its $80 here, and there's stiff competition at that price point.

I'd like to get my hands on some Alberta Premium. I've heard good things.

I almost drink Rye exclusively when I have a drink. I’m a half a shot a night sipper. I like Whistle Pig 6 and 10 year the best, Sazarac is a close 2nd. For me Basil Haden’s is just OK and as someone else stated Old Forrester is much better than it should be for the price.
