I have a Honda Accord 2000. It shifts hard into 2nd and I am told I need to have it rebuilt. $2200 - 2400 and they take 2-3 days to rebuild it.
My auto mechanic says he can put one in and redo the clutch while he has it apart for $600 but I have to track down my own rebuilt transmission and clutch etc. No warranty on his part
This is not my primary vehicle but does the $2200 from the transmission shop sound 'about right?' It comes with a 2 year 24k mile warranty.
The online companies seem to want $1200 with core exchange for the a rebuilt one. So it is a savings of about $400 to have my mechanic do it. I am learning toward having transmission house do it.
Have I missed something?

That sounds like a fair price for the work involved.

Had a transmission rebuild done on Mrs 12GA's 2007 Explorer in late 2015 for $2,500. Seems like a good price to me.

Be very wary of chain rebuild places. Hopefully you have some personal referrals to whoever you are going to use.

I had a Lexus transmission replaced at a dealer for $3500-4000. Just to bookend this.

You may want to call Sweet's Transmission in Greenville to see if they work on Honda's. I am not sure the old man is still around but they rebuilt my 68 Chrysler transmission.

Slippery slope, what's the car worth and what's the milage and condition.

Lot of expense for an 18 year old car but it may very well be worth it.

Before you jump on the "online boat" you might check into all the limitations and requirements for them to warranty it if it fails. And who pays the shipping for the return of the defective one and the replacement when it is sent to you.

I would be surprised if the online company would offer any R&R money but I have been wrong before, ask upfront.

And I doubt your own mechanic will do the labor for free if it fails during the warranty period, so allow for a second R&R charge in this equation.

As another reference, had transmission rebuild for Silverado 1500 about 2 years ago for $1700. Came with a 3-year warranty.

Can you order a JEI pulled transaxle?

I have two manual transmission Accords of this generation. The manual transmissions on Honda's are very reliable and I've heard of few failing. I wouldn't be the least bit afraid to install a used one from a salvage yard since they seem so durable.

I saw a transmission ratio chart listing each gear ratio for various manual transmission Hondas. At this time they had very small ratio changes for things like high altitudes and California. Having driven many mostly American cars with poor ratio selection for individual gears in manual transmission cars, I was impressed with this attention to detail. On the Accords I have I think the ratios are well selected.

I had one rebuilt years ago by AAmco and it had a warranty. It was more to do than yours.

The thing never ran right afterward. It always had a vibration in it. We were sorry we had it done.
I gave the car to my son and he drove it until someone hit it in front of his house.

Had one done in my Grand Cherokee about a year ago. Works great and about in line with your price. Just make sure the shop has lots of good reviews. In and out no worries. I think better to rebuild what is there than to put in something from another vehicle. Probably not a problem, but it's just how my brain works.

If it's an automatic be careful. Honda/Acura built some terrible transmissions around that time. Some of these transmissions had to be rebuilt more than once before reaching 100,000 miles. I believe they were all 5-speed auto.

Google GearSpeed, they pecialize in Honda trannys. I had the take my Prelude tranny that was fine, install an LSD and carbon fiber synchros for what I thought was a reasonable price-$1100.00 and have been extremely pleased with it over the years. It is now 18 years old and running flawlessly.

Pretty much any V6 auto from about 98-04. The 4 sped autos weren't immune to it either.
Given a clutch was mentioned in the OP, has to be an auto, since the 6MT V6 Accords didn't come about until something like 2005.

I am going to get a second opinion just to double check the price and I don't really see purchasing it and just letting my mechanic work on it. From what I can tell the price is fair but not good.
Also I do not really have that much cash on hand so I Think we are going to nurse it through for a bit.

I never hesitate to keep a car running that has a good motor and body and chasis. It is a good car.

I've had two transmissions done, one a honda 1998 and a Lexus 2007. The Honda was done by the dealer and the lexus was done by a non-dealer.

In both cases, the recommendation was to drop a rebuilt transmission. I'm not understanding why your dealer would want to rebuild it or your mechanic wants you to do the work of finding the transmission without warranty. For the dealer, I can't see why they want to tie up their space, equipment, and mechanic for so many days when they could spend less than a day to switch out the transmission.

For your mechanic, doesn't he know where the junkyards are or rebuilt transmission distributors are? For my Lexus, the mechanic knew of a lexus that was just crashed / totaled and he pulled the transmission out. It's been running 4 years now.

I'm like you, I want to squeeze out every bit of miles out of my car.

The estimate sounds right to me.
I had to have the transmission rebuilt in mine a year ago (2007 F150) when a bearing failed and took out the planetary, torque converter, clutch, and a bunch of other crap.
Ended up being $1400 in parts and $962 in labor.
