I had a visceral reaction to this thread.

What was its content? Does it matter exactly? NO, because it was fucking depressing.

Hey, guys.

We all know that this rock we're all stuck on is jam packed with fools. But do we have to keep reminding ourselves? That seems like signing up for a sour attitude.

Considering that I'm already kind of an asshole, I can't abide the negative waves man. Call me crazy.

The good in this world, is a lot harder to find than the bad, if you believe the talking picture box, and the "social media."

We all have a choice. I'm not saying we ignore the horror and the hardship, but we don't have to line up for our portions like goddamn Oliver Twist.

I hate the term "mindfulness," and all that shit, but I also am dead tired of the negativity. After 8 years of Obama, can we please cut the shit and not just go looking for things that piss us off and make us disgusted with the rest of humanity?

Pick an internet site. Almost any one you're likely to go to is just full of a different flavor of bile. Do we need to do it here to?

There is a time for serious topics, politics, etc. Everything else is a choice. Can we just all choose to not share shitty things?

They'll still be out there for you, if you want to go get them.

How bad was your day? Did someone cut you off on the way to Starbucks, Chic-fil-a, or to your vegan sex therapist?

You're probably reading this on a smart phone.

Should you feel bad about that? No. Do you really need to be reminded that humanity is still, as a percentage, savagely awful?

No.

Should you be aware of it? Sure. It's a good idea to know what is going on in the world you live in.

Could you just really think about sharing with the rest of us?

I didn't see the thread before it was edited. But I agree with you wholeheartedly. And not because I'm a prude or tiptoe through the tulips kind of guy, it's because I know I have a strong morbid, cynical streak in me.

It seems to lead almost inexorably to a sort of self-induced form of learned helplessness if people spend all of their time wallowing in that negativity. And why not? The only thing people like that are conscious of is all of the absolutely horrible shit in this world that they're absolutely incapable of doing anything about.

Beyond howling at everyone around them that anyone who doesn't wallow in the negativity is just sticking their head in the sand, of course.

I am actually in a active shooter training for civilians. He is trying to shock us into the reality of our world. So yeah, talking about Columbine is depressing.

Best friend has days to live, just said goodbye last night.

So yeah, I saw the title of that thread and decided not to open it. At least it was descriptive enough that I didn't open it by accident.

My teenager (the middle one) told me she wants to go in the peace corps.
My oldest saw a documentary on kids making instruments out of garbage from the dump and now wants to 'do' something useful with her career to help people as well.

If we look we can find the good in people, the good that they do.

Yes. It would be nice if most of the negativity, cynicism, and complaining could be contained in that section. After all, that's exactly what it's for. I suspect, though, that many post it in the Lounge to get more visibility and feedback.

I ignore and rarely respond if I see it, to non-sense.

I only watch select things on the tube. And only open threads and websites which I like or can provide some small amount of support. Call it head in the sand or what ever. There is a ton of important stuff to do. So screw the nonsense. I have no time or interest in it. By in large Para and his crew do a bang up job of keeping the sf clean and interesting so it is the highest of the highest. But I do ignore some of its threads too Wink

I've friends and family on FB that seem to find it necessary to re-post graphic tales of animal abuse. I slap those with "hide" as soon as I catch eye of them. Not that I'm insensitive to it, but that I'm too sensitive to it. I know there are evil people in the world. And there are victims of them. I don't need to be reminded, graphically, every time I turn around.

I can't solve all the world's ills, so what's the point in allowing myself to be constantly hammered with that stuff?
