Hahaha! Up yours, Facebook!
Full article at engadget: Only 4 percent of US iPhone users have agreed to app tracking after iOS 14.5 Won't be thrilled, indeed "America is at that awkward stage. Thank you Very little |
Apple is the only one that could force this with the Apple Store being the only conduit for apps. Mine is off...
|

And probably half of the 4 percent didn't know you can turn it off.

Left-Handed, NOT Left-Winged! |
I have it turned off global on my two iPhones, so I don't even get request prompts. All are automatically denied.

Google could do it, too. This isn't an app thing, so much as an app's access to other apps' data on the phone, location data, etc. It would, however, be somewhat hypocritical on Google's part, given the tracking in which they, themselves, engage.
iOS/iPadOS 14.5 pops-up a requestor first time your log-in to your device after the update. "America is at that awkward stage. Can you share how to turn tracking off? I read the article. I still don't know who or what is being tracked by whom for what purpose. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Opt out of app tracking across every app you download by going to Settings > Privacy > Tracking, and toggling off Allow Apps to Request to Track. To turn off personalized ads Select your “Settings” app, tap on “Privacy,” and scroll down to and select “Apple Advertising” (it will be near the bottom of the list). Toggle “Personalized Ads” off. To turn off location-based ads Select “Settings” > “Privacy” > “Location Services” (at the top of the display). Toggle off “Location Services.”

It's normally (under iOS/iPadOS/tvOS 14.5 and beyond) set on an app-by-app basis. If you know you don't want any apps tracking you, ever: Settings -> Privacy -> Allow Apps to Request to Track
Stop iPhone apps from tracking you in iOS 14.5. Here's how
That will prevent weather, time, geofencing, and other apps that need location in order to work correctly from doing so. "America is at that awkward stage. That was the point I was making, Google by it's very core is a tracking company and data reseller. Doing it from a technical standpoint, yes, from a control in the Google Store, yes. But philosophically, Google giving the opt-in option to consumers, no. While I abhor continued piling on of federal legislation, in the case of the tech giants, it's time to break them up, force all marketing services to require an opt-in, AND fix all EULA's where the seller cannot ban/restrict use of the product if an end user chooses to opt out of tracking/advertising. Never happen though...

In the case of mobile devices I might agree with you, although I, too, don't care for Yet More Federal Intrusion, except there is a choice: Apple. Some will say "But I don't want to use Apple because <name your reason(s)>." And that's fine. Trust me: There are things I miss from Android. Some because the developers don't think the cost of developing on the iOS/iPadOS/tvOS platforms is worth it, others due to technical limitations resulting from those OS' more tightly-locked-down APIs. (The lack of any WiFi analyzer apps being a prime example of the latter thing.) And I certainly didn't want to spend $150/streaming box when there were Android TV and Fire TV devices for less than half that. These were the trade-offs we made when we made the switch to iThings. I guess what I'm saying is IMO one can't reasonably complain about Google's invasiveness when one there is a viable way to avoid subjecting one's self to it. "America is at that awkward stage. Yep if you googlize your life they know everything and you know they do and by choice allow it...

That is true, but you can manually select, for all your apps, Always Never While Using Ask That will let you continue to use maps, weather, Skyview, and anything else that you want to have your location.
|
Thank you Very little |
I have it turned off for all apps and the weather and location apps, Accuweather and Waze work just fine...
|
Political Cynic |
I always turn location services off and turn off the and sharing. On a few updates I noticed they had been turned on again so I now check after every update.

Then evidently the apps know where you are. Doesn’t make me feel any better.

HRK, think about what you wrote there for a second. If you have location services disabled for everything, as you claim, but those apps are still able to determine your location, one of two things must be true: 1. You don't really have location services disabled for everything or 2. Disabling location services has no effect on apps being able to determine your location. My solution is I don't install apps on my phone with which I don't trust my location data. "America is at that awkward stage. I let the app track location for Accuweather and Waze. I mean, kinda important for those to be accurate. _____________

Yes doesn't sound right. I tried it and when I opened the apps it immediately request I turn location services back on in order to work. I suspect he meant he turned them off manually for the other apps instead of turning off the main switch.
|
Thank you Very little |
Correct turned it off for everything then back on only for the apps that need it and only when using the app option...
