Not a dog person...

Story could get long but the relevant parts are...

We had a rescue dog that died 2 1/2 years ago. He had heartworms

Daughters dog is lapse in heart worm prevention.
Can we safely keep her dog at our house in our old pen/yard while they are on vacation?

Yeah, it’s parvo that stays in the soil for up to a year.

Heartworm disease is not contagious, meaning that a dog cannot catch the disease from being near an infected dog. Heartworm disease is only spread through the bite of a mosquito.

Just because you can,
doesn't mean you should

Your daughter needs to have the dog tested (not expensive) and put on Heartworm prevention (also not expensive) ASAP. Also, what else is the dog not getting?
"They are on vacation" sounds like the money isn't the problem.
I'll stop preaching now, but WTF?

Yeah, it’s fine. Get it tested and start on preventative.

Bonus to putting them on it, is that it prevents further future infection, and the dog can live with the worms he already has. When those worms die(usually w/I 3 years) no more infections...I’ve done this twice. Much cheaper and easier on the dog than the treatment the vet does to kill them whil the worms are alive in the dog. The vet treatment is a poison and is hard on the animal. It does kill the worms but you have to keep them crated for weeks, so they don’t run and break off part of the dead worm before it’s absorbed and the heart recovers.

My last two rescues have heartworms,Vet put them on Simparica Trio.
He explained the meds make the adult worms sterle and will take worms out that way.
This is tailored to dog weight and it is some what pricy .
doesent matter , I will do what ever to keep them healthy.
