I miss a good fry! A decent chippy shop at midnight is an another great find.

While drinking Guiness is pretty standard, I drank many more pints of Harp and Smithwick's but if Caffrey's is available, that was my go-to.

Steves' Guidebooks are reliable resources, good to get one and use it. At the very least, you can get a general itinerary of Must See's, versus, Good to See and If You're Nearby, along with tips and insight on transportation. He's really good with history and providing some perspective so, some topics & sections can be dense. Pull-out what you don't need.

Steves also has self-guided walking audio tours. I found these quite handy for walking around and in certain museums.
Great Britain and Ireland tours

Suitcase Monkey put this together recently, his videos are a high-production quality and has solid tips. Lots of useful links in the video notes.

We did a lot of the suggested items, you can add the Blood Horse to your list of pubs in Dublin.

I like the train idea, we rented a van and drove around the area, over to the cliffs, back to stay in Cork, which is a neat town on the edge, has a fantastic Church mid town and is the final port of call for the Titanic before it left to sail to it's fate.

If your wife, or yourself are into Waterford then visit the factory, it's interesting to go through and you can buy items from them and have shipped back to your home. Since we have Waterford from the wedding the wife picked up some more items she wanted.

Perhaps a Waterford Revolver with glass boolits... Link image is huuuuuge to post here but worth a look-see

Budweiser in Dublin is blasphemy! Drink Guinness, it’s good for you.

The Irish eat them too at breakfast?

I'm going to guess either that restaurant caters to American tourists and leaves them off knowing we find it strange or it was an option that you didn't choose.

Every Full Irish I ate there in 2012 had beans.

Interesting. None of the breakfasts I had there included them.

I agree. I was never a fan of Guinness or other dark beers, but while in Ireland, that changed. I don't know if it was the cool, wet weather or the freshness of the beer, or both, but I greatly enjoyed it.

This thread really has me thinking of a trip back to Ireland! I can see starting out in Dublin for a few days and then venture out into the countryside.

I'm really enjoying reading about it!

I was just in Dublin back in June, and I highly recommend the Jameson Distillery tour and the Guinness tour. If you decide to do the Jameson tour, I'd recommend adding in the cask draw. Someone mentioned the marketing floor of the Guinness Storehouse, it's floor 3, and it was super interesting. Add an extra pint to your ticket and try their lager, Hop House 13, it's excellent. We did take the DART to Howth, the kids liked the train ride and Howth is a nice seaside village. There is a no frills breakfast place right across the river from Jameson called Oh'Rourke's, you pick 4,8, or 12 items, it was great. The National Museum of Ireland was also very intersting, and free. I'd skip the Temple Bar area, basically their version of Bourbon Street.

Two of the sites were mentioned two posts above yours. Wink. Thanks for adding the website.

One other potential day trip from Dublin is Cashel. We really enjoyed that site and its history.

Oops. Must have been skimming previous posts.

As for Cashel, it's one of my favorite places in Ireland. If you stay at the Cashel Palace Hotel there is a private path you can use to get to the Rock.

Hi Nuclear- I just saw your email and I just responded. I am sorry that I hadn't checked it sooner!

I’m going to Dublin for a week at the end of September / beginning of October. My wife is going there for business and I’m tagging along doing touristy things, which is great (for me) because Ireland has been on my bucket list for awhile now.

So recommendations for Dublin and the surrounding countryside, day trips unless there is something I simply MUST see farther away.

Thanks in advance.
