I’ve been watching Marshall over on Wristwatch Revival. He says all the things that others here have said. He does as little as possible to get a watch working properly. He’s done a couple of watches that Rolex wouldn’t repair.

You all bring up excellent points. I'll add some details here.

Also, I will try and post some pictures later today.

My Sub is a two tone with the Serti face and it was given to me by my wife. It will always be "my" watch.

Upon deeper introspection I am in agreement with the thought of keeping it exactly as is. I will take it to my nearest Rolex retailer and have it inspected because it does need to be cleaned at the very least. I would like to have it serviced and pressure tested just to make sure I can wear it and treat it like a Submariner. JHE I will take your advice and make sure Rolex understands I want NO restoration done to the watch.

I really appreciate the stories about family watches. Thank you all as well for the advice. I did quite a bit of reading on this topic and have an even greater appreciation for my uncle's (now my) watch.

I'm a bit late here.

Went through a similar situation with an inherited 1965 Omega Constellation Cal 561 PiePan ST168.004.

Absolutely did NOT want to send it to Omega for service and risk their making unwanted "tweaks."

Went with a locally trusted guy who preserved the "wabi" and serviced the watch. He was so aware of my desires that he contacted me about the crown-stem assembly, which on this watch includes an integral O-ring seal. He indicated that the seal was bad but Omega no longer has this part. Only aftermarket exists and of course they would not have the Omega symbol on the crown. I opted to stay with the original and be mindful that its meager factory 3BAR waterproofing is compromised. Added a fresh alligator leather strap and am very happy with the result.

r0gue's recommendation makes the most sense to me. Leave it as is....especially given the circumstances.

Yep, I's say get it restored...

Always wanted one.....

But, If you have not received the watch yet...I'm make sure the uncle did not die with a lot of debt.... by accepting the watch you could also vibe accepting any outstanding obligations.

WTF?

If you get his watch, you do not get his debt or any part of it.

Please don't restore it. If you do please choose a very qualified craftsman. I can refer you one if you need.

Rolex won’t pressure test it with the original crystal. An older sub like yours is not going to be pressure proof. If it gets wet it will be fine, but don’t dive with it. You should discuss your watch with David Truong before you turn it over to a Rolex dealer. Once the watch goes back to a Rolex service center, you have no idea who will be working on it.
