Consider using petroleum jelly instead of Neosporin or equivalent.

This is advice from a dermatological surgeon. A few weeks back he cut out a squamous cell cancer from my shin, the size of the MOHs surgery was a dime around and more than a nickel deep, gross and ugly.

He was pretty adamant about using PJ, saying people can develop allergies and other problems with long term 'sporins'. It's going to take time so whatever you use, it'll be in contact with the wound for weeks I'm guessing. In my case he has me changing the dressing twice a day.

If I tore the whole damn thing off, I'd want a 'finger protector splint' (link) just for some piece of mind while trying to get on with life. Also as a constant reminder that my whole fucking fingernail is torn off there.

I'd get the short one at the bottom right in the picture there and just tape that thing over it every day with a little gauze over the nailbed.

I tore the nail on the the middle toe of my right foot off about two weeks ago. I have nerve damage so I didn't feel it at all. just noticed some blood and a dangling nail. I just pulled it the rest of the way off, then peroxide, Hibiclense, and a bandage for a couple of days. forgot all about it 'till I Read this.

I can't help much but. When I was in high school I blew up my right hand with a Cherry Bomb. One thing it did was take off my right middle fingernail.
I have not touched fireworks since and I'm 71 now.

But I did handle grenades in the Army.

I feel your pain!

Over this past Christmas holiday I was assembling a porch swing for my parents. Was drilling out a hole, and when the drill punched through the other side, my pinky finger stopped its forward progress. Drill bit went right across the top of the pinky finger, completely ripping the nail off, and mangling the skin underneath.

I sucked up the pain and irrigated the wound with rubbing alcohol. Took a bit for the bleeding to stop. Kept the area covered in Neosporin and wrapped with gauze for the first two weeks or so. Finally was able to downsize to a normal bandaid after that until a new layer of skin had formed.

Six months later, the nail has grown back and its like nothing ever happened.

I got my thumbnail caught in my lathe back in 2019. The cutting bit dug in under my fingernail and literally tore my nail out from the root.

They reinserted the nail and stitched it in place.

It hurt for a few days and eventually the nail worked itself out and fell off completely, The new nail took about 6 months to grow back. Looking at my thumb now, you'd never guess it was ever torn out.

Ouch, Benny. Thank you, Ripley.

I just keep whatever antibiotic I have on hand on it till it starts to heal and covered loosely to keep dirt out of it.
Unless it gets infected it will grow back.

Toenails suck, usually have to wear your sock in the shower so it loosens up and not stick to it.

I haven't done this since I was a kid. Fortunately, I can tell you it definitely grows back though it's one of the more painful things I can think of. Put a bandaid on it.

The most painful injury I had was with a nail. I was a teenager playing football with friends. I was on the ground and someone's knee came down on the tip of my finger/nail which was on the ground. Didn't lose the nail but the end nearest the finger pushed up through the skin. You could push down on the tip of the nail and the other end would rock up through my skin.

I have had stitches and staples from injuries and that one there hurt the most by far.
