Boy am I glad I clicked the belt drive component kit tab!!
Kind of rainy nasty warm night here and the tundra started squeaking like crazy.
So I hopped on the RockAuto to get my serpentine belt, tensioner, and idler pulley.
Dayco makes the factory parts for Toyota in this application.
Dayco Belt $36.79
Dayco Tensioner $53.89
Dayco Idler Pulley $41.79

I then noticed the Belt Drive Component Kit Tab.
There is a Dayco kit for 39.99. I check the included parts sure enough all the part numbers match.

So $48 shipped it is!

I am shocked to find that a kit would cost less than the sum of its parts.

It's simple. The individual parts are in short supply, but there are plenty of the kits in stock... Razz

I see it being slightly cheaper kind of like ordering in bulk but only $3 more than the cheapest part in the kit alone.

Actually could be true.

In the US of AF, we often had to order (next higher assembly) and/or "Kits" to obtain parts to fix jets because the single part we needed was unavailable in supply. (and unavailable in supply, means no part in Air Force inventory).

Like ordering a short block so you can get an oil pump. Then you put the bad pump on the short block and return it to supply through the Repairable Parts Cycle (RPC) documenting the "problem".

Better than K-balling parts (in most cases).

Same with seals, gaskets and such from kits, used in rebuilding components at the field level.

The cost of kits can be less, because the cost of packaging, handling, (all logistics) of single parts leads to a higher price, and kit pricing may reflect lower pricing because it is destined for shops and accounts for their markup, where an individual part directed to consumer might be higher.

In healthcare it is called unbundling to maximize reimbursement. CMS has clamped down on this stuff. Instead of billing for an appendectomy you bill for making the incision, removing the appendix, closing with sutures etc.

I've run into the same thing with tune-up kits for my Honda mowers. You can often find a kit that contains an air filter, bottle of oil, spark plug, and set of new blades for a bit cheaper than you can buy those individual items separately.

Not as dramatic of a price difference as yours, but still kind of a head-scratcher.

Kit arrived today. Have to admit I was somewhat expecting some sort of econoline or the products but thankfully not the part numbers match up and they are all made in the USA!

Sigmonkey gave the right backround. Someone did a study many years ago, comparing the cost a new automobile vs. buying each of the individual parts separately. I forget the actual numbers, but the parts would have cost something like 10x the fully-assembled vehicle.

I could part my car out for considerably more than it's worth as a reliable running driving car, and that's only selling the big parts.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."
