the golf courses were overrun with them

“Loose as a goose” is an accurate depiction.

Right before I retired a few years ago, I had to travel from Texas to Arlington Heights just north west of Chicago. Got my rental at O’Harea nd made the drive out. Got to the hotel and the first thing I smell is goose shit! The place was lousy with the Canadian types. They wander around like they own the place. I despise them. And no, I don’t run from them. Just like standing up to a dog, one of the best defenses is to not show fear or back down.

At two companies I worked at with large grassy grounds and water, they hired dogs to come regularly and harass the geese during the months they migrate. Both had an expressed and stated policy that employees were not to feed the geese.

The reason for this is to avoid any claims made by animal right groups that the land is (I forget the exact terminology) part of their natural habitat and critical to their lifecycle. If this happened, then the land couldn't be developed and be rendered basically worthless in terms of building on top of the land.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I had one come chasing after me once while riding the motorcycle. Wasn’t in the mood for a speed bump.
