What to do in Louisville, KY Login/Join

Family and I are going to stay in Louisville in 2 weeks for a GSSF match in Lexington. We are planning on getting there Friday morning and want to do the Louisville Slugger tour. What else would be fun for kids (8, 11 and 12)?. Can't do Churchill Downs, 2 of the kids are extremely allergic to horses, not a good idea... Would like to do a distillery tour, but do they allow kids on the tour?

Any suggestions?

Too bad about the horse allergies. Frazier History Museum, not far from the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum. Muhammed Ali Center a bit further up the street. Don’t know about kids at a distillery.

I think the kids will like the Frazier well enough; you’ll love it.

This coming weekend will be the fall Machinegun Shoot at Knob Creek Range. It’s a little South of Louisville. May be there.

Kids are fine on tours. Woodford Reserve has a pretty good one. Makers Mark has a good tour but is harder to get to.

Louisville also has an RC airplane field in Tom Sawyer park that is fun. I believe that there is also a jack-o-lantern festival going on. They typically carve and light up ~5000 pumpkins (pretty cool).

Any particular reason you are staying in Louisville if the match is in Lexington??

Kentucky Science Center in Louisville is our favorite place to go with Kids.

Rooms are a bit cheaper, UK homecoming is that weekend so I’m guessing that’s why the prices are higher. Closer to the sights we are planning on seeing in Louisville.

Any thoughts on the Mega Cavern tour?

Also, any CCW issues I need to be aware of? I did a quick search and looks to be very similar rules to MO.

I forgot about the underground zip lines at Mega Caverns. That was fun and a good family activity.

You can walk to Indiana on the Big Four pedestrian bridge.

I've heard that Beckley Park is really nice, although I haven't been there yet.

We did a family tour at Woodford, with lunch, and it was a fun time. Kids were fine.

On a side note, I helped get the giant granite glove at the Louisville Slugger museum into the building and get it set in it's final position.

Beckly Park is nice. Plenty of walking trails, bike paths, canoe rentals, ponds, creeks, etc. There are plenty of carryout food places nearby where you can grab something to eat and have a picnic.

I live in the Anchorage area of KY. If you get stuck, hurt or get into a situation where you need something just let me know.

Everything listed above by others is great. If you can't find family oriented things to do in Louisville, you aren't actually in Louisville.
And Kentucky is extremely firearms friendly.

Check the respective web sites. Here's a blurb from Woodford Reserve...

https://www.woodfordreserve.com/distillery/tours/

Join our daily tour for a guided education through the Distillery that explains the history of bourbon, how we’re unique at all five sources of flavor, the bottling process, and much more. At the end of the tour, guests 21 and over can taste our award-winning craft bourbon for themselves in the visitors’ center.

I'm thinking that kids are allowed, as they specifically made mention of "21 and over". So I think they expect kids.

Patton Museum is inside the gated property of Fort Knox. It was closed when I was there in August, but it has re-opened. In all honesty, when I was on post visiting my brother, a neighbor (who is a COL in armored cav) said the museum wasn't that great. But maybe they added some stuff during the renovation. YMMV...

The Big 4 Bridge is something special. Great views of the Ohio River and the skylines. About 2 1/2 mile roundtrip if you go all the way to the ground on the Indiana side.

Oct 27, 28 is the National Gun Day gunshow at the fairgrounds. This should be a good one.

The Evan Williams Experience is just down the street from the Louisville Slugger Museum (which was a great tour BTW). Kids are welcome at Evan Williams but can't sample the wares. I also like the Maker's Mark Museum in Bardstown. On the way if you are going to the Patton Museum (or the other way round).

Louisville has a pretty good zoo. Also just over the river there are fossil beds that are exposed by the dam that date back millions of years.https://midwestwanderer.com/falls-of-the-ohio-fossil-beds/

Last time I was there was in 2013. Stayed on the Indiana side. I was not disappointed with any of the restaurants we ate at.

Should you go to the Patton Museum, just be aware that it has been re-designed after the Armor School relocated to Ft Benning much of the armor exhibits went to Ft Benning too. It does have many of his personal items on exhibit.

If your kids like science, I bet they'd like a distillery tour. Not a whiskey drinker, but I do love the science and craftsmanship. Love to watch a cooper do their thing too.

Trying to decide between Makers, Woodford and Bulleit. Woodford is the farthest, followed by Makers and Bulleit. Any advise on those 3? Are the tours pretty much the same or is one more informative than the other?
