I live in Alameda County California and the wonderful people of this County just voted in another .5% increase for the "children".
This brings the Sales Tax Rate up to 9.75%
Just wondering what Rates are in free America...

South Florida (Broward County/Ft. Lauderdale) sales tax is 6% plus a 1% discretionary tax up to $5000 sales price. So 7% on most everything.
Property tax is around 2% of the homes value.

I can’t believe this passed. I mean i can but I can’t imagine people voting themselves ever higher taxes. Thank god that Prop 13 measure failed. I see the smart folks in Ptown voted no on their bond measure.

7% state, 2.25% county.
But no income tax.
As a former resident of Contra Costa county, I appreciate the latter and accept the former.

Maine is at 5.5% statewide, but no local sales tax... yet.
Towns have looked into it, but public pressure has kept it at bay.
I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

State sales tax is 7%, with counties adding their own. My county (Carter) is 2.75%, for a total of 9.75%. However, there is no state income tax (on wages/salaries) and other taxes are relatively low. For example, my car tags were $32. This rate would make me balk at buying a big-ticket item like a car, however. (Edited to be more clear.)This message has been edited. Last edited by: egregore,

As Gibb said, no county-level tax, but the towns (much the same as townships in other states) hit you with "excise tax" on anything that requires a license plate. I'm about to go register the bike, that'll cost about $100.
Good news is, it gets depreciated annually so it hurts a little less every year.
A new vehicle REALLY smarts tho. State nails ya for 5.5% and then the town hits you with max excise tax based on the VIN, NOT what you actually paid. The first set of tags on the Tundra were almost $700.
Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

Weird, does that mean only people who own land pay taxes?

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

Alaska has no counties, thus no county sales tax, no state sales tax, and Anchorage has no municipal sales tax.
