My local source has two brand choices. Maytag and Whirlpool. Stainless front.
if you have some thoughts on these two specifically I would love to hear which one and a model would be ideal. Thanks guys and gals. No other brand options so plz limit responses to the two mentioned.

By reputation Maytag should be the better one. I would think the heavier of the two would be the better one. They don’t intentionally make it heavier, it may have more, better, heavier built parts. Read web reviews, at least a few different ones. If available, get one with the stainless internal liner/tub. Again, better built longer lasting. Check to see if it has a drain filter, serviceable by you. Mine does (Bosch) but it took me a whil to make that discovery. Nice feature.

Do not go for the 20 year old model.
While it might appear "feature heavy", it likely will balk at anything more than a single plate that had a light salad, and maintenance will be higher than your safest blood pressure...

I think Whirlpool makes Maytag, and the Maytag is the higher end of the branding. I have a Kitchenaid, also made by Whirlpool and its a beast, and made in the USA (parts source unknown to me).
Appliance Brad might chime in here and call me out, but he's the brightest on the forum on these matters.
Also, when in doubt, Sigmonkey offers sage advice on this matter, but I do like the 20 year old models on occasion for light duty.

I just put in a Whirlpool to replace a LG. Unfortunately I didn't read fully & got one with a plastic tub instead of stainless. No complaints, otherwise, so far.
