I do it like tatortodd with the wired backhaul, multiple WAPs, and using separate SSIDs for different types of devices. Also a "Guest" login. I use wires for as many fixed locations as I can: TVs, security cameras, desks, etc. I also have VLANs setup for IoT, TV, the security cameras, Guest, etc, but that's much more complicated with a smart switch and OPNsense router.

I can't recommend an eero system high enough. The 6+ version does everything a normal house needs with ease. Set up is easy, I have never had to restart or reset anything, it just works. __________________________

Yes! Nearly any AP designed in the past ten years support this method of connection, and allow devices to seamlessly move among them. You do not have to give up half your radio spectrum to "backhaul." Or, better yet, separate the AP and router functions to devices designed for those purposes. AIO (All in one) units invariably make compromises in one or the other function, even more so when you stuff a network switch and firewall capabilities into the same tiny chassis. With a GigE cabled "backbone" you can easily support half a dozen APs. Do not include your ISP-provided AIO device in your network infrastructure if you can possibly help it. Several manufacturers make weatherproof APs designed for outdoor placement. A box in the window will often fail the crucial WAF (wife acceptance factor), IME. TP-Link has been solid for me as well as Engenius and Ubiquiti(*). Netgear makes decent LAN switches as does Cisco. (*)One of SF's most distinguished and knowledgeable network gurus has been quite vocal about not liking Ubiquiti products because their "unified" management software does not work with the Java distribution he uses. For most folks, this would be a non-factor. I like them and have found them quite useful in dozens of network designs, and very good on a price/performance basis.
