Staring back from the abyss |
Is the vertical divider in the Liberty safes moveable? It looks to me that they are all running right up the middle. I would like to have more rifle room and less shelf room. Or, can you order it the way you want it? ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

You also have to consider where you're going to locate the safe and whether you'll be able to get the size safe you want/need into that space. I wanted my safe in the basement. My requirements were discussed here on SF. It was determined that getting the safe I wanted into the basement would have required professionals and temporary bracing added to the stairs to support the load. Instead I bought a Zanotti Armor safe, which comes in pieces, and assembled it in the basement. As for locks: When my mechanical (dial) lock started exhibiting signs of impending failure I replaced it with a top-of-the-line digital (keypad) lock. It's a gamble, I know, but I tired of the dial-turning exercise. "America is at that awkward stage. A number of years back, I was in the market for a quality gun safe. A friend suggested I get the largest one I could afford. Turned out he was right. My only regret was not going even bigger. The majority of the manufacturers run them right up the middle on the narrower safes, and then sometimes split the safe into thirds on the wider bodies. Browning has some interesting interior options that allow a bit more flexibility. If you're a woodworker then you could build your own rack/divider/shelf setup that works best for you in any safe.

I can make both sides spaces for rifles by just removing the shelving except for the top. The middle divider (verticals)appears permanent. Allen look at used ones someplace like Facebook Marketplace or CL. Large safes can sometimes be picked up for a great price because they're harder to sell. Another place to check is moving / storage companies, a friend owned one and often had a few safes that he'd pick up and hold for people. Many times they'd call and tell him he could have the safe, they didn't want or have a place for it. Once a year he had a sale for all the stuff people left at his storage. Of course buying used means you'll have to pick it up and move it and moving a large one can be difficult and expensive, which is why large safes can sometimes be found for less money. I've had to move my 3 safes (one being 3,700 pounds) three different times. LOL I told the kids next time it'll be their problem! Once I used my friend's moving company but the next 2 times I hired a tilt bed and driver from a towing company which worked great because it has a winch, straps and chain tie downs, and he brought a heavy duty pallet jack along as well. I think I gave him $300 cash to move it 25 miles to my present house. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

When I started my search for a serious safe I went to a safe dealer (as opposed to a gun safe dealer). Looking at three different brands that were the size I wanted, the quality of a US made Fort Knox safe was really evident. Keep in mind I wasn't looking for huge so it left me looking at down sized models. I ended up with a S and G mechanical lock since I had already replaced an electronic keypad on my first safe. The safe dealer delivered it and bolted it to the concrete floor. If two guys can carry it in, two guys can carry it out. Whatever you decide to do, keep in mind that nobody ever said "I wish I'd bought a cheaper safe".

And most casual homebreakers aren't going to do either - break it open or haul it off. If it is reasonably big and heavy and reasonably secure it will defeat the ordinary burglar. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

These are interesting questions and I used to follow them closely. We built this place nearly 12 years ago. At the time I had 2 safes, one a Browning and the other a pretty Liberty. Gave those to my sons. Just had the builder make me a tiny 10x20 concrete room. The worker doing the framing asked what it was for. I told him, so he moved the forms wider apart. Then added in all the scrap ribar he had on his truck. Poured it into a corner of the basement so anyone wanting to get into it from the outside will need a backhoe and a bunch of time. Then the builder did me another favor. He poured the front porch on one side of the safe/vault. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I am impressed with your knowledge and effort. You allowed the worker doing the framing to know what the reason for the room. The Egyptians just eliminated the laborers building the tomb. {Just kidding of course}This message has been edited. I am very happy with my AMSEC safe and its quality. I bought it twice the size I thought I needed, but now wish I bought even bigger. Thankfully my safe has never been tested by a burglar. I also have a small very well built safe that can hold a couple pistols although I use it for other things. Both safes have a digital keypad and I much prefer them as I have had no problem with them. I can open them within seconds even in low light and under stress. I have had to open my AMSEC large safe under stress twice in low light and got it opened very quickly. Back in 1999 I bought 2 National safes all with electronic locks. They have never failed me and the quality of construction is top notch. I think Liberty bought them, but recently brought the name back? I had to buy slim line 24 long gun models because I have a half turn spiral staircase and they are the only ones that would make it down the steps! Rifles were kinda cramped, but pistols fit great. ------------------------------------- Always the pall bearer, never the corpse.
