I don't get caught up in the Facebook 'likes'. My sister has grumbled about it some, I just ignore it until she goes away.

Yes I have a very minimal Facebook account, don't really care what goes on there. I have it for a little communication here and there.

Well, in high school I had several girls tell me they "liked me for a friend" but not "that way".

I don't think my wife even likes me anymore. But we have six kids, and run a business together.

OK, I don't think I like her either, but we have six kids, and run a business together..... Wink

Before I had a computer, I had 3 friends. Now, I have 642! Some of them only like me for my car, some of them only like me because they like my wife's car. Most of them, I'll never see!

I'm at the end of the Boomer generation.

When I was growing up, my family moved frequently. I went to 4 different elementary schools, three high schools. Even with the best of attentions, stamp-on-the-envelope correspondence fades with time as life moves on.

Though I am not an active Facebook user, I do have an account. Through that I've re-established contact with a lot of my long-lost school-mates. More importantly, though, I have reestablished FRIENDSHIPS with a couple of them.

I agree that a "friend" on Facebook isn't necessarily a real friend, but on the other hand, that contact is a start. I can see what they are up to, and comment when I want to, and share the same. I don't have to make the point to correspond with everyone as an individual.

At the same time, of course, that isn't "real."

Where people tend to make the mistake, I think, is never moving the relationship out of the superficial 140 character virtual world.

I know the price and limitations of the technology, but find it useful as well. I've been able to do things that simply wouldn't have been possible when I was growing up.
