What do you do? Why, you grab an AR15 to watch the proceedings, of course.
Newspaper story below:

Law enforcement officers were pulled away from their investigation into a shooting on Monday after an armed man was spotted on a power line, Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant said.

The man, who was wearing khaki shorts and a dark blue shirt, was at first believed to be a News Herald reporter with binoculars, Whisenant said.

However, further investigation showed that the person was a neighbor watching the scene from a distance with an AR-15 assault weapon, according to a BCSO press release.

The gun was the same type of weapon N.C. State Highway Patrol troopers said they were using to secure the area.

The man, who was not identified in the release, was spotted on the power line twice, the release said. Burke County SWAT officers also had the man in their weapons’ scopes.

“Our mission is to protect all persons around a crime scene, and we want to keep our focus on locating and keeping a dangerous suspect from harming any innocent persons,” the release said.

Whisenant said the distractions kept officers from giving their full attention to the standoff, which lasted for multiple hours outside of an empty camping trailer on Deer Creek Drive in Connelly Springs.

Officers believed that the suspect, Paul Alan Hyler, 55, went inside the trailer after he shot his fiancées son, Andrew Jackson, 43, in the stomach.

But when the SWAT team entered the house at around 4:30 p.m., five hours after the shooting occurred, officers were unable to locate Hyler.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, the sheriff’s office was still in the process of monitoring the area and checking on other leads. Hyler is believed to be armed and dangerous, Whisenant said Monday night.

A search warrant was issued for the property, the release said. An arrest warrant also was released for Hyler for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.

“Shoot me all day long, but don’t touch my youngsins,” said Yvonne Garcia, Jackson’s mother and Hyler’s fiancée. “This is just like a dream.”

The press release stated that the shooting happened following a domestic dispute between Jackson and Hyler at the trailer that Hyler lived in. However, Garcia said that Hyler left and returned to the residence often and spent Sunday night outside of the home.

Garcia also said there was not a dispute between Jackson and Hyler and that they were best friends.

“There wasn’t no argument,” Garcia said. “(Hyler) is just crazy.”

Garcia said she had only been up for a few minutes when she went outside to get a cigarette from Hyler. When she walked outside, she said Hyler pointed a pistol at her and threatened to kill her.

She then went back inside the home and told Jackson that Hyler had a gun. Jackson stepped just a few feet outside the door, and Hyler shot him in the stomach, Garcia said.

“My son didn’t even get to say anything,” Garcia said. “He just said, ‘Mama, he shot me.’”

Despite Jackson’s injuries, he and Garcia were able to walk up the road for help, Garcia said. A neighbor called 911, and an ambulance arrived on scene to transport Jackson to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Jackson was then airlifted to a Charlotte hospital, Garcia said.

Whisenant said Tuesday evening that he did not have an update on Jackson’s condition. Garcia said one of the last things Jackson said to her was that he was dying.

“(Jackson) is the best person you’re ever going to meet,” Garcia said. “Just pray for my son.”

Garcia said that Hyler was using methamphetamine and crack cocaine prior to the shooting. He also has a history of acting violent toward Garcia and has mentioned that he is a mercenary “trained to kill,” she said.

300 win. mag from about 200 yards might be a better starting point

My brother was the "long gun" on his state SWAT team and he repeatedly said that the first consideration was having enough gun.

I read the entire post but I don't have any idea what it's about. I'm a simpleton and there is too much crazy in this story to make sense to a simple man.

I guess it made more sense to me because I was involved in it somewhat.

Our Sheriff's department was actively chasing an armed suspect that had just shot a man. They twice had to stop and take cover because of a man in the wood line that was armed with an AR15.
He turned out to be a neighbor that was just being nosy.

And btw, this is what passes for newspaper journalism in my neck of the woods.

We had a slightly analogous situation at my old house. I lived in an area of shoebox shaped 5 acre lots, divided by east - west parallel streets 1320' apart with a single north south access road about 1/2 mile to the west. The area is designated as a rural settlement; most lots are cattle or horse fenced to 4' high, and many are further cross fenced.

One Saturday morning, my back yard neighbor noticed a police car parked by his mailbox with lights on. We could also see the OCSD helicopter working just to the north of us. He spoke with the officer at the car and was informed that there was a subject moving generally south across country who had already made it 5 miles with dogs in pursuit and they planned to stop him on my neighbor's east-west road when he tried to cross. There was a police car every quarter mile along that road, and the dogs and helicopter were driving the suspect ahead of them into that trip line.

My neighbor notified the local voluntary homeowner's association and they sent out a text to all registered homeowners. Within 15 minutes, every house along a mile long line was armed. Carrying pistols, with long guns at the ready.

The police caught the guy in the driveway of a house 5 lots from mine, 1000' south of their stop line. He almost made it, and would have been among a bunch of houses where he could have broken in for shelter, hostages or a carjacking. He might also have just given himself up in exhaustion. But no one in our are was taking that chance.

In our case, the police knew that the neighborhood was armed behind them, and they didn't seem to care in the least.

I relate this story to note that out here in the country, the residents take their collective security pretty seriously, and we recognize that a determined aggressor may elude the police, so we are prepared to defend ourselves. The guy on the hill with an AR might not have been crazy or misguided. He could have been my neighbors and me.

I can't believe the nosy neighbor with the "assault weapon" was much of a threat. After all, he was "on a power line" and just keeping his balance probably demanded most of his attention. It's certainly not the most stable platform from which to shoot.

So would a jolt, say 400K volts, set off the cartridges in his magazine?

That would be interesting to see!

The stupid is strong with both the power line climber and the reporters that "rote" [sic} that story.
