At our age, don't really care about a super wazoo picture. 1080p 4K is fine. Just bought a Q4 TCL Roku 55" for $258 delivered from Wallyworld. Simple setup. Linked with all our streaming channels instantly. Same interface as our last one so no learning curve for my wife. Harshest Dream, Reality

Thank you Very little |
IF LG's interface on their smart tv has improved it's a good set, have a 60" in the garage that has survived several FL summers, also have a Samsung in the family room. The Samsung has a better interface for the smart tv and syncing up your smart phone for iphone and androids works very well if you want to stream something from an app on the phone (mirroring) Costco usually (and Sams for that matter) have a good selection and price from low end to super high end sets. Buying at Costco can double the warranty and in some cases they have tripled it. They also have a concierge service, you call them and they take care of contacting the manufacturers warranty department setup the claim and those companies respond immediately when Costco's Concierge department calls. Other than that WalMart has good prices, and you can find good deals on Amazon for tv's. $500 should get you a nice smart TV in the 55 inch range easily. Link Sams Club $500 and under TVs

Fighting the good fight |
1080p =/= 4k. Two different things. 1080p is 1920 x 1080 resolution. Typically referred to as "FHD" or "Full High Definition". 4k is 3840 x 2160 resolution. Typically referred to as "UHD" or "Ultra High Definition". 1080p is becoming much less common these days, and is really only seen on new sets that are around 40" or less. 4K is the new standard. There's also a lot more to "super wazoo" picture quality than just resolution alone. A higher quality 4K TV with better contrast, brightness, color palette, refresh, sharpness, processing, etc. will look noticeably better than a cheaper 4K TV, even though they're both the same resolution.

Unless you actually watch over-the-air TV, where 1080i is the best you can do and 720p is still very common (unless you go to the new ATSC 3.0 over the air format, which isn't fully baked yet) To address what TV is best, we really need to know what the OP watches, and how he gets the signal. Over the air, or does he use a firestick or roku box? DVD or Blueray?? Would it help if the TV was a Smart (enough) TV so he could possibly drop the external firestick/roku if he uses one.. .

Okay, I misspoke. It's this one - TCL 55" Class 4-Series 4K UHD HDR Smart Roku TV - 55S451 so 4K, not 1080P. At this point in my life it's good enough. More things right now to be concerned with than a TV picture. Harshest Dream, Reality

Three Generations of Service |
99% Netflix and Amazon Prime, via my DSL internet connection. Current TV is a SmartTV with an on-board program that brings up all the usual apps - Hulu, YouTube, Tubi, etc. ad nauseum. The main reason I'm getting a new on is that Visio SmartCast Home won't load any more after various attempts to fix it including updating the firmware. Previously, I've had to replace the audio board and I have to reboot it every time before it will recognize the remote. Tired of fucking with it. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

We just bought a 50" Amazon Fire TV for $300 and it's been great so far. Built in Firestick capability was a plus and saved us buying another stick for $40-50. For our use this is essentially a "disposable" TV that we move to and from a cabin, in and outside in spring and fall for sports, etc. The picture quality is great, remote is very logical and straightforward. Audio pretty good too! You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

My direct experience is a Roku TV that I bought from Walmart, and set up for my mom. It's great for the streaming that you want. So I recomme3nd the Roku TV's without hesitation. Only 2 issues with it: First, it's only 720p, but for her it's good enough, but be sure to look at the label so you are aware of what you are getting. Second, it had no ethernet port. Wifi only. I hate wifi in general, but it is what it is, and it was cheap which was important for this purchase. in terms of ease of use, my mom has no problem with it, but her needs are minimal. 3 months ago, I would have said, "be sure to get NextGen capability" (ATSC 3.0), but now I'm solidly in the camp with those who say don't worry about it. Especially if you don't use an over the air antenna much. It just won't matter for you. The Fire TV's sound like they are worth a shot too. .

While we're talking about mega TVs, be sure to consider where it's going to go and width. Especially of the feet if it will be on a piece of furniture. For example that Roku, like so many TVs now, have the splayed feet at the very ends of the screen. if your shelf is narrower than that you're screwed. Or you can balance it precariously on the edges like my SIL has done in guest room. I swear the tiny feet on both ends are hanging over by half on dresser. You could sneeze it off. Samsung as an example have a center pedestal design on most of their larger models, as do some others. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

I'm assuming he meant cable TV service, not cable internet service. The Enemy's gate is down.

My vizio pooped itself a few weeks ago and I picked up a 75 inch Hisense from Costco for under 500. It was kind of a why not price. I have their 55 inch in my study and its been great. It has all of the apps built in so I don't need additional crap to plug into it and it looks good. As well, a nice feature is it has two slots for legs, one wide and one slim so it fits on most stands even though its huge.
