Record winds cause major damage in Rapid City area
Winds of up 101mph were recorded last night between 3am and 6:30am.

Lots of down trees and structural damage in the greater area. A big tree next to our house split with half on the roof and the other half in the front yard. Two neighbors had their roofs peeled back.

I did experience wind at my house blowing around 98 or so. It ripped a third of my Russian Olive tree up. I saw it peel some siding off my neighbors house. The wife and kids were pretty shook up. I wasn’t exactly relaxed. Hope everyone is safe bald1.

I hope that your roof repair goes well.

It’s generally known that San Diego has a mild climate. But in addition to that, San Diego has a lower incidence of strong winds than anyplace else that I know of. And no tornadoes or hurricanes.

Dang, those are some crazy numbers, especially for non tornado or hurricane related winds.

Sounds like you were hit by another derecho.
5 years after one hit Iowa there are still remnants to be repaired. Hope no personal injuries.

Well they've made it here, but thankfully it seems to have dumped most of its energy on the way. We're showing sustained winds of 20mph at the local airport, with gusts up to 36. It's rattling the siding and there are some branches down, but nothing too serious. Combined with an outside air temp of 16, though, it's giving us a "feels like" temp of -2. The dog and I abbreviated our walk this morning just just a mile and a half, and despite insulated jeans, a Carhartt, wool neck gaiter, and my rabbit-fur ear-flap Elmer Fudd hat, I still feel like my face is coming off.

Hope you guys out west of us didn't get too much damage. 100+mph sustained is nuts!

Hope you can find a crew right away to fix your roof.
I'm still cleaning up blown over or snapped trees from the wind shear Easter morning.

My electric power company says they recorded 110mph near me.

Crane is scheduled to remove the tree from the roof today. Roof inspection, tree limbs removed from site, siding repair, etc. all to come.

Came through here too the other day. I lost nine 75-100 foot tall pine trees. It’s been so wet around here the past few months that the ground is saturated, and they just fell over all in a line. It looks like a tornado went through. Happy I spent the money last spring to take down anything that could hit my house or shop as they surely would have. Now I need to find (pay) someone with an excavator to come and take care of all these root balls. Mad

I guess it's not just NY...all my Christmas decorations are down or blown into the woods, and the wound pulled my storm door open ripping the hydraulic struts out of the frame.

Hopefully everyone stays safe with minimal damage

Wow! We had 40mph gusts here last night and I was complaining about that. Can't even think about 100+. Glad you are alright bald1.

Central PA, just lost my 3 best producing black walnut trees. Luckily, not near the house (fingers crossed). I'll be curious to see what these winds are being clocked at, but I've had 90mph winds that didn't snap the trees. (snapped, not uprooted)

Category Two hurricane force winds. I live in hurricane alley and we are somewhat used to that. You find out how robust your power grid is, and what trees bite the dust.

A Wyoming Story

Yet another day of very high winds, sustained about 40 mph, gusts to 67. We have lighted Christmas wreaths out front on the 3 windows that face the road. They are suspended on wire. One wire was snapped on two wreaths and they’re hanging from the remaining wire. I hoped to ignore the problem, but it became apparent that we couldn’t. Out we went with a 6’ step ladder and a plan to bring in the two wreaths.

The so-called “gusts” of high winds felt more like sustained to me. Carrying a ladder when the wind hits it is an adventure. We got the first wreath down from one of the garage windows without too much difficulty. The second was a bit more problematic; it’s much bigger and hangs in the window of the front bedroom. My wife is waiting to receive it as I removed the remaining wire from the hook. She had the wreath in her hands when a huge gust of wind literally blew her over onto her back. I thought it was funny. My wife didn’t. I had gifted her with a cashmere stocking hat a year or two ago. It was loosened in the fall and blew off her head, headed to Scottsbluff. I walked quite a ways looking for it. No joy.

We live in what meteorologists call a “wind prone area.” It’s always windy in the winter months; this year, thus far is worse than ever. Winds are coming straight across the upper tier of states from the Pacific. This means that temperatures are moderate, because a blocking high pressure ridge has kept out cold Canadian air, but also snow over much of the West.

I think the manufacturers of vent hoods for the kitchen should add a fan speed low enough to be relatively quiet, but enough to keep the wind from constantly banging the vent flap.

Yeah I got some roof damage today, but the winds weren't anything near that.
