My first attempt at cultural appropriation of Scandinavian peoples
Ok, not really… I’ve been looking for a way to stack firewood that is more efficient than my usual method of stacking piles between the pines at the back of my yard. Any time there’s a windy day, the trees sway enough that pile integrity is compromised and the result is a pile I have to re-stack. I do not want a wood crib as I already have 2 sheds. I saw an article with woodpiles done the Scandinavian way and figured I’d give it a shot. I’m pretty pleased with the result so far- the pile is about half as tall as it will be eventually and contains (so far) about 2 full loads from my 05 Colorado. The base is several pressure treated 8’ 4x4’s my neighbor gifted me when he tore down his attempt at a deer proof garden when he moved away. I’m trying to source affordable plastic pallets as they are the preferred method. It looks pretty cool.

The wood is from a massive dead red oak I dropped for my neighbor which he is sharing.

Dropping trees is NO JOKE, and that one looks terrifying!

Well done lad.

It isn’t cultural appropriation. It’s cultural appreciation. Fuck the leftist progressives and their cult of hate. Smile

The Scandinavians have been doing this a lot longer than we have.

I like that- It's so appropriate paying tribute and respect where due.

Looks like a smart idea and never would have thought of it.

As a child of a Scandinavian (Swedish), I'd say good looking wood stacking.
I'd never heard or seen it done, but that may be because it's referred to as Norwegian Wood Stacking when I did a search for more examples.

Around here the Molson/Coor rep has been giving away the plastic pallets. They tell the store to get rid of them. Maybe check with some convenient stores, beer distributor. The plastic pallets are impressive. Very heavy and well made. It would serve your purpose well. Looks like they’d last forever.

The first pile, correctly called a Norwegian woodpile earlier in the thread, is done.

Hmm....I've been fooling around with wood for more years than I care to count and I have never seen this before. I like it.

Those landscape timbers used as a base used to be pretty reasonably priced. I wonder if they still are?

Do you cover the top of round stacks? I may try making one or two round piles like that after I fill up all my rows.
This stack is under a 6' overhang which keeps almost all rain off. The other stacks are between carport posts but under 2' overhangs so some rain and snow blows on them. Firewood really dries quick and through when stacked like this but it just isn't as space efficient.

If done properly, I read that a tarp isn’t necessary if you have uniform shaped pieces of wood with bark on them to make a top layer with bark side up. I plan to tarp this pile when inclement weather is forecast, then i tarp for sun and breezes to be able to season faster.

Here is a video that lays out the process a bit more, uh, neatly than mine. This guy uses a lot of cool techniques to make his piles look good, and hold up over time.
