I don’t have fiber internet avail. Currently use Verizon hotspot but it’s very limited. Viasat claims to be able to provide streaming hd tv service as well as net. Supposedly lots of time streaming before throttling back. Anyone use them? Can you stram hd tv? Does it throttle back or slow down ? Are there peak times when service degrades? Is it as good as advertised? Any info appreciated.

Yes , I do with little too no problem. I play poker on line, web stuff, watch you tube with very little buffering etc... I also was skeptical but ViaSat made a believer out of me. My only other choice was Hughes Net. My email is in profile if you need more info. This message has been edited. Last edited by: SSgt USMC/Vet,

You can’t do anything that requires low latency if that’s important.

I'll admit, I Googled what kind of freaky weird frogger with BBQ game this is, and couldn't come up with anything but poker. Hopefully that was the intent. If not, we need to know more about porker. Unless it's about oversized folks.... You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

Thanks for the replies. What is “latentcy”. How about streaming hd like netflix?

Short version is it's the amount of time it takes the signal to travel from your computer, to the satellite, and back again. Most/all satellite internet, at least until this point (don't know about ViaSat specifically, but Exede & Hughes Net both suck), have too much latency/lag to be effective for streaming and/or gaming. _________________________ "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. Hughesnet will stream Netflix. Don't know about your company.. probably about the same. Latency is the time between clicking (or speaking) and the time that person on the other end gets the message. Using an internet phone it would show up as a distinct delay between your talking and them hearing you - can be disruptive in that context or with some computer games where you are competing with other people who have little latency (you end up getting shot while standing around a lot). ------------------ SBrooks

Latency is the time it takes info to reach the other end of it's journey. The internet is a 'web' where there are a bunch of relay points that try to route your signal in the shortest distance/time. The nearest 'relay' to you is probably a few miles, maybe low 10s of miles away. A satellite is a LONG way away (100s of miles), then the next relay from the satellite is a LONG way away - making the journey take much longer. Latency affects things that need to happen quickly - like voice/video/gaming, etc. Think of it as reaction time. Streaming doesn't necessarily need low latency to work, but sometimes latency is used in the calculation of how good of a connection you have & that will cause some issues with satellite ISPs & streaming
