We have Wellcare for our prescription plan. Last year the premium was $2.90/ month. Believe it or not, this year it is actually $0. Don't know if it varies by state, we are in Louisiana.

I'm not sure which one of the Wellcare plans we're using, not sure of the name, but wife and I are both using one of the Wellcare Part D (Rx meds) plans that has a premium cost of $0.00 (free!) per month. My copay for blood pressure meds cost nothing. Wife's two Rx meds, not sure yet, but if there is any copay, it will be very low. Push comes to shove, we could just bypass insurance and pay cash with the GoodRx discount and total cost for wife's meds would be around $125.00 annually.

I'm only on a generic cholesterol drug. It seems just paying cash for it will be the cheapest way to go. But I want to sign up for a Part D to start with, even if I don't use or need it.

Thank you.

WellCare should work fine for a generic cholesterol drug. I pay $0 for a ninety day supply from my local pharmacy. My monthly premium is 50 cents a month.

Aetna

My Aetna did the same thing. Picked a different plan that fit better.

I'm curious if this is unique to this particular plan, or it is part of an across the board massive increase. Any others experiencing similar increases?

A new Federal Law has been put in place where the maximum yearly out of pocket cost cost for prescriptions is 2000 dollars for those on Medicare. Which means that the health insureres will have to offset that new limit. IRRC, and the memory is a bit fuzzy on this, but previously the max out of pocket cost was about 5400 dollars a year. The really bad news part of this equation is that this country has zero price controls on prescription meds so if you have something like lung cancer that can be held in check with meds the cost for those life saving meds can be 100K or more per year.

I've stopped counting.

I just recently signed up for Medicare. I have to go through VIA benefits according to the company I retired from. VIA set me up with Wellcare for Part D for $0.00. Of course I only have 3 standard prescriptions, 1 for cholesterol, 1 for allergies, and 1 for tooth paste.
