Someone here recommended Benton's and as the fears over the WuFlu ramped up, we bought an aged ham. It has been sitting in our pantry since March and we cracked it open yesterday.

I have never had a product exceed my expectations as much as this ham does. The Aged Country Ham it is smoked- they do an unsmoked as well. This ham is comparable to the best hams I have ever had- I have travelled and lived in Spain and France, and been in Italy, and this is right up there. It is absolutely phenomenal. We are buying another one, once we get through this one.

Whoever it was on this forum that made the recommendation, you were 100% correct. Amazing stuff.

Benton's is well known amongst a number of famous restaurants and chefs. I've bought a few in the past, knowing we were going to have parties and holiday dinners, we refer to it as American Prosciutto.

I didn't suggest it, but their hams are fantastic!
If you think their hams are good though, wait until you try their bacon. It will ruin other bacon for you.

It needs no refrigeration, and at $32/4 lbs it isn't too badly priced when you compare it to premium store brands.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Yeah it's good stuff. The bacon is excellent too!

Even made a side trip there before on a ride to pick some up. I must have posted this before because it was already uploaded. Smile

Suppose they do retail sales there? Three hours from the house... Road Trip!

For a little more money you can get whole smoked hams sliced and vacuum packed. They don't list that option for the whole aged smoked hams that I can see.

Look at the white board in this video, first seen about one minute in it list ribs, steak even hamburger patties... if you can freeze the vid at a spot where it is readable.

Their bacon is sublime, it’s almost TOO smoky to eat with your eggs and toast, I used it in dishes and sandwiches etc.

Made deviled eggs and whipped a little of the solidified bacon fat into the yolks/mayo mixture and placed a good amount of crispy chopped bacon on top of each egg - DELICIOUS!

How do you eat this ham? Do you break it down and freeze what you don't use?

In any event, it looks delicious!

I am treating it exactly like a Spanish jamon serrano, slicing it thin and eating it as is. when there is enough cut for us, we wrap it back up in the paper, with a small amount of plastic wrap on the cut surface. I may get a jamonero from amazon to hold the ham.

It does not need refrigeration.

-adding, we live in FL and the ham has been hanging in our pantry indoors, where we keep the house at 77-78 F.

I've driven by their place dozens of times going up to Seymour to see my Dad. Next time I'll be making a stop for sure.

Another SigForum thread that caused my wallet to be lighter. I had forgotten how good Benton’s bacon is. Placed my order tonight so I will be reminded soon. Thanks.

It is a hard cured ham. Just slice some off, cover it, and store it. No freezing needed.

Agreed! It's become popular due to endorsements from celebrity chefs who are using it in dishes, not as a stand-alone.

My favorite bacon is the Nueske's Applewood smoked bacon.

I live fairly close to Benton’s. We’ve had their Ham, bacon, and hot dogs. All were tasty but the bacon and ham are favorites in the house.

Yup, get yourself a ham/salmon slicer (long boning knife works too) and shave off thin slices of beautiful, cured, porky goodness. Cover with cheese cloth or, a dish towel.

I've made sandwiches from the one we had. American version's of the French Jambon Beurre, basically ham & butter sandwich.
- Grabed a nice baguette, sliced the right size, warmed it up so it was just cracking on the outside, slice it lengthwise in half.
- Generously butter up both sides, I used Kerry Gold or, Strauss.
- Then laid in 3-4 thin slices of ham, no need for anymore, cured meat goes a long way in the flavor department.
- Give it a squeeze and bite-in Smile

Have you been in the business. I ask them via email but no response so far if the products are available retail for walk-ins. It does not mention it on the web site so it may require preorder...

They are open for walk in business. I go there and buy packs of bacon several times a year. Haven't ever bought the ham though. Guess I'll have to try it sometime.
