Y’all told me to get the WD Purple last time. After 4 years that drive crapped out. Not too bad considering I have 3 cameras recoding 24/7 and 2 recording on triggers. Then deleting video after 7 days.
So the drive gets a workout.
Just checking the WD Purple is still the way to go.

It is. I have one in a dedicated PC running Blue Iris and a half dozen POE cameras.

From the various Blue Iris groups, it seems like people are still regularly recommending the purples as well.

And I'm still avoiding Seagate at all costs. Too many issues, although that was 8 years ago Smile

I would have thought that a solid state or similar would be the way to go, but some have said that they aren't built for the constant write/overwrite that drives used for camera systems go through and can fail early. I'm not sure if any computer experts here can verify one way or another.

Technology wise I can’t speak but cost is a huge factor for me.
A 4TB drive fits my needs.
$90 for a 4TB HDD vs $400 for an SSD.
I have my OS installed to a small 250GB SSD so it boots and loads quick. Then BlueIris writes to the 4TB HDD.

If the 4TB HDD dies every 4 years but the 4TB SSD lasts 20 years (a SWAG), which is the better deal?

The current state of technology is that SSD have fewer read/write cycles before going kaput. Mechanical drives, namely the WD Purple is still the way to go.

Purple is king for camera systems, I am running three 32 channel systems, each one running 8 of the 6TB drives. I preemptively replace the drives when I replace the systems, which I finally did all three last year, the prior systems ran since 2015 with no issues, just smaller size purples previously. They record 24/7/365 and delete oldest continuously as it writes new.

One of the systems is located upstairs in an access hall with no heat/air just off the production floor, while it’s in a cage with good airflow it still gets toasty in summer and I figured it would eventually have a failure but not a one. (Knocks on wood…)
