Fiery Weekend in Cuba: Protesters Burn Communist HQ as Trump Talks Spark Hope

Nightly protests against communism throughout Cuba reached a fever pitch this weekend as protesters, armed with little more than local piles of garbage and combustible material, set fire to the Communist Party headquarters in Morón, Ciego de Ávila, in the early morning hours of Saturday.

Cuba has experienced ten consecutive nights of nationwide protests, following months in which hundreds of protests throughout the island have broken documented records, in response to the aggravated state of poverty and misery under communism in the first months of this year. While Cubans have long experienced extreme shortages, a lack of access to basics such as food and medical care, and the violent repression of their rights, the arrest of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro on January 3 cut off a critical lifeline of nearly free fuel that has also left the country almost entirely without electricity.

Without power, the regime cannot properly operate surveillance technology – or even lights at nighttime to see the faces of protesters – a situation that Cuban citizens have taken advantage of, rushing into the streets shouting “freedom!” and “down with communism!”

The protests appear to have been emboldened by the Communist Party admitting on Friday that its officials are in talks with the administration of President Donald Trump. Trump has for weeks told reporters that he was in conversation with Cuban officials for the possibility of an end to the repressive, 67-year-old communist regime in the country, but the Party had denied such talks until abruptly confirming them on Friday.

Many of these protests have involved Cubans burning the massive piles of garbage that the regime has allowed to fester on street corners in major cities. In Morón, the protesters escalated this tactic on Friday night by reportedly first looting the headquarters of the Communist Party there, then burning the furniture and documents there in – and later appearing to set the building on fire.

Dramatic video footage, taken by locals, shows a massive bonfire outside the building and potentially touching it (the quality of video footage on Cuban mobile phones is limited). In some videos circulating online – and shared by reputable outlets such as Cubanet and Martí Noticias – women near the fire can be heard shouting, roughly, “burn it, to hell with it!” while men can be heard shouting “burn it all!”

Cubanet reported that the protest in Morón attracted “hundreds” of people and was verified by local communist newspaper coverage. The newspaper reported that at least five people were arrested and one injured.

Speaking anonymously to Martí Noticias, which is based in the United States, a Morón local described a harrowing scene of chaotic repression in response to the uprising. The person estimated that “more than a thousand people” had gathered to protest communism, but were met with fierce brutality, including children.

“They totally ransacked the Party, outside, they burned it all. Most of theme were young, about 15, a lot of kids, they arrested a lot of kids,” the person detailed.

“It was 300 percent repression,” the testimony continued. “More than four policemen were beaten and there were over a thousand, over a thousand people. … the repression was very large, large, large, enormous.”

“A 15-year-old boy, covered in blood, beaten, downtrodden,” the person detailed. “There were rocks flying.”

Telemundo reported that at least one person was shot, apparently in the leg. Some unconfirmed reports identified the victim as a teenaged child.

Protests continued Saturday into Sunday, including in Havana, where the massive presence of the Communist Party makes public outbursts more difficult. In the capital, protests largely took the form of “cacerolazos,” a common protest practice in Latin America in which residents bang pots and pans as loudly as possible to express disapproval of the current situation. Cubanet listed at least five Havana neighborhoods erupted in a cacophony of pot-banging on Saturday night. To make clear their goal, the protesters also shouted “down with communism!” and “freedom!”

Trump Vows to 'Take' Cuba as Island Reels From Oil Embargo

President Donald Trump vowed Monday to "take" Cuba as the communist island plunged into darkness under a total power blackout linked to a crippling oil embargo imposed by Washington.

After nearly seven decades defying the United States, Havana's communist authorities are under massive pressure from a Trump administration determined to make history.

"You know, all my life I've been hearing about the United States and Cuba. When will the United States do it?" Trump said.

"I do believe I'll be...having the honor of taking Cuba," Trump told reporters at the White House.

"Whether I free it, take it -- think I could do anything I want with it, you want to know the truth. They're a very weakened nation right now."

It was one of the Republican's most explicit threats and came as the Caribbean island of 9.6 million people grappled with yet another major power cut.

The blackout resulted from a "complete shutdown of the national grid," Union Nacional Electrica de Cuba (UNE) said in a statement, adding that work had begun to restore electricity flow.

Cuba's ageing electricity generation system is in shambles, with daily power outages of up to 20 hours the norm in parts of the island, which lacks the fuel needed to generate power.

But since the U.S. ouster of Cuba's top ally, Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela, on January 3, the island's economy has been hammered further as Trump maintains a de facto oil blockade.

No oil has been imported to the island since Jan. 9, hitting the power sector while also forcing airlines to curtail flights to the island, a blow to the all-important tourism sector.

In a bid to relieve economic pressure -- and meet U.S. demands -- a senior economic official in Cuba announced Monday that Cuban exiles would now be able to invest and own businesses there.

"Cuba is open to having a fluid commercial relationship with U.S. companies" and "also with Cubans residing in the United States and their descendants," Oscar Perez-Oliva, who is foreign trade minister and also deputy prime minister, told NBC News.

The blackouts, as well as regular shortages of food, medicine and other basics, are spurring frustrations. In a rare moment of violence, demonstrators vandalized a provincial office of the Cuban Communist Party last weekend.

It was part of a new trend of protests in which people bang pots and pans at night, at times yelling "Libertad," or freedom.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel acknowledged in an X post "the discontent our people feel because of the prolonged blackouts" after an outage in early March.

"What will never be comprehensible, justified or admitted is violence," he said.

The government has rationed gasoline sales and some hospital services due the fuel shortages, and Diaz-Canel acknowledged last week that his government had held talks with the United States.

Trump has alleged the fuel blockade is a response to an "extraordinary threat" posed by Cuba to the United States.

Trump said Sunday that Cuba "wants to make a "deal," which could come quickly after his administration has finished the war against Iran.

"I think we will pretty soon either make a deal or do whatever we have to do," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

I just looked it up and Fidel Castro has been dead almost 10 years. I thought there was an opportunity for them to shed communism when he died, but commies just kept on going. Applying a little more thought to it though, it makes perfect sense, as those small few at the top of the communist party live like kings and would want to keep their power.

After Venezuela stopped shipping them oil and most of the country hasn't had electricity for 10 days sounds like things are getting dicey. Good for them! Things have to get hard to have a revolution, I hope the population is getting good and properly pissed off at their commie overlords and ready turn democratic and capitalist.

Our Church sent a group of folks on a mission to Cuba last year. I chose not to go for a variety of reasons.

They said while they were there the electrical was unreliable. Scheduled 4 or 8 hours of “on” followed by same period “off”. Even when it was scheduled to be “on” it wasn’t always on as expected, yet was always off when scheduled to be off.

Maybe they should have invested in solar?

Hopefully this one turns out great and the Americas are on their way to much bigger and better things.
South and Central America have been held back for a century plus because of corrupt and inept governments, both right and left wing.
If we could get all those countries even reasonably well governed, watch out the rest of the world.
Between all the natural resources needed and oceans on both sides to protect us, the rest of the world could be left to fight it out between themselves, if that's what they want to do.

Yes, one of a number of similar promises expressed or implied that the US has failed to keep.

JFK evidently had reservations about the operation but felt pressured into agreeing rather than having the guts to just say, “No, we’re not going to do that.” Then some of the support was withheld without letting the US-backed fighters know that was going to happen.

Not that I believe the promise should have been made in the first place, or that the invasion would have been successful if the support had been given to the extent promised, but if we’re not going to keep a promise, people shouldn’t be led to believe otherwise.

And also as usual the Cubans were sold a bill of Communist goods that they had no understanding of, but what would have happened if the US had conducted an effective operation to overthrow Castro? He didn’t succeed because the Cubans loved Batista and nobody wanted him deposed. If the US had invaded it would have been one more example of “Yankee imperialism.” The failed Bay of Pigs invasion was one of the best things that could have happened to Castro, not unlike the feeble efforts by some Western powers, including the US, to reverse the Bolshevik revolution in Russia: “See, people, the imperialists want to prevent you from overthrowing a repressive regime and deciding for yourselves how you should be governed,” etc., etc., etc.
