Like arfmel I also had a `97 F250 Powerstroke 7.3L with 285K miles on it. I lent it to a friend 3 years ago and she managed to get distracted by her damn cell phone Roll Eyes and total it, otherwise I'd still be driving it. Along the way I had to replace a water pump, a fuel line switch module, an alternator and a couple of fan belt tensioner pulleys.

I’m a Ford guy, and I’ve said so repeatedly here. That said, given what you’ve described as your needs; I really think you should look for a well maintained Dodge with a Cummins diesel. Going back 20 years, you never saw a Chevy diesel at the rodeo grounds. I think that by 2000 they had moved on from the dreadful 5.7 L Olds made diesel, but they weren’t yet making inroads in sales back then. Yeah, there were some Power Strokes, but it was probably 3:1 Dodge/Cummins. I just think you are more likely to find a well cared for truck, just because there’s more of them. The Cummins is undeniably a super engine and the 5.9 L engine has achieved legendary status.

Good news, that motor was dropped in 1985. We had one in a station wagon. Worst vehicle our family has ever owned.

Fast forward 20 years and the problem with those dodge trucks are that the chassis and electrical systems are shit. I rarely see one of those on the road and we don’t salt the roads down here. I still see a lot of 7.3 Powerstroke Fords on the road.

In 2001 we started fulltime RV living. We pulled a 12k 5th wheel with a 2001 Chevy 3500 stended cab DRW with the 8.1. Pulled that 5th wheel west through the Eisenhower tunnel on I70. We pulled US 70 eastbound through New Mexico. From Yellowstone we pulled to Tacoma. We never had an issue with the mountains. Truck only had one issue. The ignition switch failed, the key wouldn't turn. Repaired under warranty. In 2006 I traded it for an International 4700 crew cab because we upgraded to a 20k 5th wheel.

If you can find a Chevy with the 8.1 (496 manly cubic inches) do it.

I’m a dodge guy, admittedly ... and I love my Ram 1500 so there’s that up front, but I have seen the same thing about rodeos. Was up in Big Timber the last few summers and my wife and I made a note of the trucks being used to haul the horses, gear and trailers. Lots of Ram trucks ...

Look at what tow companies are using for their tow trucks. Wink

I spent years in ag supply hauling ridiculous amounts and towing the same ridiculous amounts. By and large it was with a 3/4 ton truck equipped with overload springs 350 odd cubic inch engine, automatic trans and a driver who was paid hourly.

Find a good used 3/4t pay the man and use it, carbs pretty much suck so avoid anything pre ‘87. No matter your choice it’ll have some sort of issue. Allow money in your budget for unforeseen expense. Brakes and tires are not cheap on HD trucks

Now that is super nice! The 8.1 trucks are hard to find. Can that haul a full sheet of plywood easily ?

Yes absolutely. With the rear seat folded forward , the rear area is flat and holds full sheets of plywood and sheetrock with ease. It sleeps two adults as well.

So far the only thing I have found with an 8.1 is an Avalanche. That's just a wee bit too small of a truck bed.

I looked at a few of the websites that search nationally and saw a few. You might have to go out of your area. Maybe from an area where they don't salt the roads?

Yes, I would definitely want to look at the underside before buying. In older trucks, rust can be a major problem. Buy something that hasn't been driven where they alt the roads!

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
