How do I transfer data from an older laptop to a new one that has Windows 10?

I understand Windows Easy Transfer does not work.

Thanks.

Can’t you network them together over your Wi-Fi network?

I've always had luck transfering pictures, and video and music by just popping the old hard drive into an external case and plugging it in to a usb port.

Usually just identifies itself as another drive.

Network them?

Sounds like a job for one of the computer literate children we've made over the years.

I appreciate the help.

If you can’t network, just copy your stuff from the old PC onto a usb flash drive. Then copy it from the flash to the Win 10 machine.

Yes. transferring data to a flash drive works good as long as you have a big enough flash drive.

If not, a usb powered 2.5" laptop or and ac powered 3.5" desktop drive enclosure will work just like a flash drive but with a ton more space.

Just did a data transfer from Win 7 to Win 10 using Easy Transfer, worked like a charm, pics, documents went over with no problems.

How much actual data (i.e. not programs) do you have to transfer? That answer could expand or limit your options.

This got me thinking. Are you old enough to remember the days of physically connecting two computers via their parallel ports to transfer files between them? I would not look upon those as the good ole days. Smile

Oh yeah, did that too.
You can connect computer to computer directly with a x-over cable and a configured IP address on the same subnet.

It doesn't seem that long ago when:
* There was no Internet per se (to be compliant with bigdeal's correct statement)
* Online "billboards" were with 56K (or less) phone modems
* 10 BASE 2 networking evolved to Ethernet
* There were NO Routers (local NAT) - networking was done with "proxy servers" and/or software
* Local Internet connections were all Public, Unsecured - open to everyone
* The first Internet pages latterly took forever to load
* Phone hardware today was more powerful than the computers of yesteryear
* and oh yeah, I used to be able to actually spell back then. Smile

But there was this, which no one under 30 can even identify. Smile

Unless I'm mistaken, the crossover cable might not be needed since most computers figure it out and are able to use a regular RJ-45 LAN cable.

To make it really easy, just plug both computers into the same router, and share folders and drag and drop.

ulsterman, let us know if more details are needed.
