France's most revered actress Catherine Deneuve hit out Tuesday at a new "puritanism" sparked by sexual harassment scandals, declaring that men should be "free to hit on" women.

She was one of around 100 French women writers, performers and academics who wrote an open letter deploring the wave of "denunciations" that has followed claims that Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein raped and sexually assaulted women over decades.

They claimed that the "witch-hunt" that has followed threatens sexual freedom.

"Rape is a crime, but trying to seduce someone, even persistently or cack-handedly, is not -- nor is men being gentlemanly a macho attack," said the letter published in the daily Le Monde.

"Men have been punished summarily, forced out of their jobs when all they did was touch someone's knee or try to steal a kiss," said the letter, which was also signed by Catherine Millet, author of the hugely explicit 2002 bestseller "The Sexual Life of Catherine M.".

Men had been dragged through the mud, they argued, for "talking about intimate subjects during professional dinners or for sending sexually-charged messages to women who did not return their attentions."

The letter attacked feminist social media campaigns like #MeToo and its French equivalent #Balancetonporc (Call out your pig) for unleashing this "puritanical... wave of purification".

- 'Witch-hunt' -

It claimed that "legitimate protest against the sexual violence that women are subject to, particularly in their professional lives", had turned into a witch-hunt.

"What began as freeing women up to speak has today turned into the opposite -- we intimidate people into speaking 'correctly', shout down those who don't fall into line, and those women who refused to bend" to the new realities "are regarded as complicit and traitors."

The signatories -- which included a porn star-turned-agony aunt -- claimed they were defending sexual freedom, for which "the liberty to seduce and importune was essential".

Oscar-nominated Deneuve, 74, is best known internationally for playing a bored housewife who spends her afternoons as a prostitute in Luis Bunuel classic 1967 film, "Belle du Jour".

Deneuve has made no secret of her annoyance at social media campaigns to shame men accused of harassing women.

"I don't think it is the right method to change things, it is excessive," she said last year, referring to the #MeToo hashtag. "After 'Calling our your pig' what are we going to have, 'Call our your whore?'" she said.

"Instead of helping women, this frenzy to send these (male chauvinist) 'pigs' to the abattoir actually helps the enemies of sexual liberty -- religious extremists and the worst sort of reactionaries," the collective of women who signed the letter said.

"As women we do not recognise ourselves in this feminism, which beyond denouncing the abuse of power, takes on a hatred of men and of sexuality."

They insisted that women were "sufficiently aware that the sexual urge is by its nature wild and aggressive. But we are also clear-eyed enough not to confuse an awkward attempt to pick someone up with a sexual attack."

I read that article this morning and it put a smile on my face.

Perhaps some American women will write a similar letter or join the French one.

I wouldn’t hold my breath. We have such an interesting (screwed up, puritanical) relationship with sex in American culture.

I have a feeling that the true motivation for the "me too"movement is to expand female access to what have been male dominated professions.

The current witch hunt has nothing to do with sex, and everything to do with political power. The left created a beast of intimidation and manipulation in the guise of protecting women and, similarly the race card to protect minorities, with the belief it would only be used to destroy the right. The beast has turned on them and is happy to devour them in the way they hoped it would devour Republicans, religious people, and anyone else they deemed their enemy.

This seems right. In my experience, admittedly more limited than I had hoped, really attractive women have no need of these antics. They have a lot of experience, understand the game, and can play to win. It is the lesser beauties and ordinary gals who are susceptible to this stuff.

While in no way do I intend to defend guys like Harvey, clearly there's a double standard with sexuality and socially-acceptable sexual behavior. I was just going on FB last night and saw some new stupid auto-complete form the ladies are sharing. It's basically one of those things you type in (and in this case) "His penis is" and out pops something. "His penis is...like a shuttle, you can ride it." You'd be amazed how these things attract flies like shit. I swear half the girls I went to HS with were responding and posting. These are professionals, teachers, moms, etc. (i.e. they represent the real world).

So anyhow, not bitching about their right to do so, but frankly these are most of the same people posting #metoo and such. I have no issue with this particular FB post I mention, but just imagine if all the guys in your FB friends list started sharing and posting "Her pussy is..." I'm 100% certain there would be a shit-storm brewing in a lot of FB circles.

I remember the first time a female manager put hands on my leg sitting next to me while talk and saying something. It wasn't sexual but imagine a guy doing that! I also think about many of the cases of female teachers raping students. While I'm only going on memory, it seems like child-abuse by a woman is viewed as less significant than by a man. Hell, just think to your own upbringing. I'm pretty sure most male students wouldn't even think of it as rape in their mind...even if it indeed is.

We live in strange times.

That needs a repeat.

Most teenage boys would be wondering how the heck they got so lucky.

I’m reminded of the skit (I think it was Robin Williams, but it could have been Eddie Murphy) talking about how when you get older you can start doing different expressions. He goes on to say that as an eighteen year old male you only have one expression - surprise. You are surprised that you are getting any. I always laughed at that one, but there is probably a kernel of truth in there...

In the casinos I worked in the only ones that ever cried sexual harassment were the ugly ones that weren't getting the attention.
All these women that can now have babies with out a father are missing the point of a males sex drive.
In the future When they want that baby it'll have to be by frozen sperm because they will have reconditioned men to not make a move.
