Too old to run,

I am looking for a used 50 cal rifle barrel.

I want to try making a wood turning tool out of it.

Any and all suggestions deeply appreciated.

I have spent too much time looking through the interweb. All I get is advertisments for crap that have nothing to do with a rifle barrel.

So, resorting to the end all, be all, for all things gun related.

Thanks for tips, suggestions

Yes, I actually do!

Take about 14-15 inches of it, grind off about 1/3 of the length, grind the right slope on the "front" end. Put a handle on it, and I have a first rate bowl gouge.

And I can make more than one out of it.

To buy a finished tool costs more than I wish to spend. I have made most of my own turning tools. This would just be one more.

Edited to add: I have a 50 muzzle loader in the gun safe so it I just wanted a 50 cal weapon, I already have one.

I would pay $50 for a rifle barrel. As I understand the one in the link is a 50 cal MG barrel. I have no way to deal with all that steel. Rifle barrel seems to be perfect.

Appreciate the suggestion, tho.

Actually not as big a project as one might think.

Cut the length needed/wanted (14-15 inches. Grind off only about 2 inches off the top of one end. Cut it down into about half the bore. Sharpen the edges, etc. Put a handle on it.

Will be an interesting project anyway. And I have a couple grinders, each with really course wheel on one side.

At least, that seems to be the fine print. Big Grin

No big rush, I have other tools I can use. Let me know shipping costs and I will send you a check. Also, as a memento for helping out I will offer you a couple of turned bottle stoppers. Or maybe a natural edged box of about 4 inch diameter. Your choice.

Thanks a whole bunch!!!

Edited to add: I will email you my address!

Need yours to send the check and the other stuff. Would you prefer bottle stoppers or the natural edged box? The box makes a nice pencil holder for your desk.

appreciate the offer. will keep it in mind if the other plan does not work out. Turning 80 in Feb tends to limit my speed on certain things! Big Grin

Seems kind of like a sin to destroy an M1 barrel. Altho, having a gouge with .3" gap on the cutting end would not be bad, either.

Those tools come in various sizes. I have seen them from 1/4 inch up to well over an inch.

I figure gun barrel steel will hold a good edge while cutting/turning wool.

If my idea turns out well, I will post a picture of the tool, assuming I can figure out how to actually post a pic.

Have thought about it, and it would give me a second and smaller gouge. IF you still want to get rid of it I will take it and see what I can do with it. The chamber might make a good gouge as well as the .3" barrel to make a smaller one.
