Our 2004 Honda Pilot keeps on refusing to start. I recently changed all the spark-plugs and the appropriate check engine light reset and is gone. The battery tests fine, the interior lights, bells and warning signals all are functional but the car won’t start. HOWEVER, if I disconnect the battery and reconnect it, it immediately starts up and drives like nothing happened.

No warning lights, weirds sounds, hums, etc. I first thought it might be the alternator but I don’t hear a clicking sound and as mentioned the interior lights and warning bells work.

Possible broken wire leading to the starter. You jiggling it around temporarily fixes the problem. My guess, anyway.

How old is the battery?

You said there was a check engine light. Did you ever get the codes read, what was the code? BTW I don't think this had anything to do with the not turning over.

Are the battery terminals clean and the cables tight? I've seen what you describe when a battery cable is not tight on the battery terminal. I would check the cables first.

It is manual transmission?
Try putting it in neutral if automatic.

One of the starter safety switches is open.


My CRV just did this and it was the clutch safety switch.

Either fuel or electrical, My bet would be electrical.
Simple is usually the answer.
I would start with a load test on the battery.
Then a check to see if there is a spark at distributor.
If all checks out go to the fuel system, check to see if your fuel pump is working, if not check the fuse.
No sputter or attempt to fire would usually mean electrical.

Another vote to check the neutral safety switch.

Cranking without starting or not cranking?

No cranking or clicking. Just dead air. I disconnect the battery and it starts right up. Battery terminals are clean. Auto too.

Not cranking, but cranking after the battery is disconnected and reconnected, makes me suspicious of the anti-theft/engine immobilizer system. When it doesn't crank, what does the indicator light do? If it flashes rapidly that is where your problem lies. Try it with the other key(s), if any.
