If you're looking at a Brother for B&W printing, maybe take a look at their MFC series.

You get features like copying, scanning (flat & multiple page), printing both sides (duplex).

Depending on the model, you can connect it to your home network via Wifi or network cable and share the printer with everyone at home. This also allows you to scan to your computer over the network.

One more endorsement for the Brother laser. I finally tossed the one that had been in the hangar office for more than fifteen years; I think I paid around a hundred bucks for it, it was a Brother factory refurb.

ps: I did not toss it because of any problem. My hangar lease was not renewed and I did not need the printer, we have two Brother lasers at home already and did not need a third one.

I've had a Brother MFC for several years and it's been solid. B&W laser and the toner lasts a long, long time. The scanner/copier comes in handier than I thought it would.

I bought the cheapest brother B&W laser printer/scanner from walmart 2-3 years ago & have been 100% satisfied. Easy setup, wireless, no problems.
Bought generic toner & it has been fine.

Probably buying a color laser soon as the wife has complained about only having B&W, will go brother again.

Printers are so cheap now that you should be able to afford a really good one. I have a Brother Color Laser all in one, MFC-L8905CDW. I had a Brother B&W laser printer before this one. I print mainly black and while with this one, but it's nice to be able to print color if I want to. It's huge, but I have room for it and after over a year I'm very happy to have it.

Until it won't. I print about 20,000 pages a year from a Brother. Generic toner may work but when it ruins your printer or prints with smears or is only half filled with toner you will regret it.

I bought an HP color laser all in one at costco for around $380, costco extends the warranty on electronics by a year. This was to replace a 10 year old HP color laser all in one that I use for business.

I have a HP 1020 laserjet printer. Many years old and still works like a charm.
One PC, a Dell tower, got a corrupt in its 1020 driver. But the laptop works the 1020 just fine.

I can't fix the driver in the Dell. It reports there is a print job I need to clear. I can't find that print job in order to clear it...

Also interested in printer info. Thinking a laser printer might be best for me. If the toner cartridge(s) are idle for a long time is there any problems?

If you can squeeze 10-years of use out of any home electronic device, you've gotten the value out of it.
I can expense my ink and paper so, operational costs aren't an issue for me. Easy enough to go down to Costco every 6-7 years and pick-up the latest version once updates and attitude become an issue.

No problems if they sit, the internals may settle after a few months and you may have to shake the cartridge. They do not dry out, the first cartridge that comes with it is not fully loaded. They next replacement will last a lot longer.

I prefer separate scanners and printers to a multi-function device. I had a bad experience where the scanner broke, and now I had this huge thing that was only half useful. Anyway, I strongly prefer Fujitsu/Ricoh ScanSnap scanners; and Brother for laser printers.

I too would have recommended a laser but the game-changing tank printers hit the market a few years ago and they truly are great.

They’re an inkjet type but have refillable individual ink tanks instead of expensive cartridges. We have an HP Smart Tank 7001 and it’s been great for the almost two years we’ve had it now. My wife prints a ton of stuff every day for the kids for homeschooling and it just keeps ticking. For an inkjet, the print quality is quite good and the ink is not even due for a refill in almost two years.

It’s wireless and we can print from any computer in the house, iPads, iPhones, etc.

Another thumbs up for Brother laser printer. And it's probably not even available without but make sure whatever printer you go with is wifi capable. Handy to print from the phone and gives you more latitude with locating it.

(and HRK, that's why my last printer was my last Epson)
