in an almost unheard of and unprecedented scenario, an Air Force helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in Manassas, Virginia after someone shot at the helicopter from the ground.

The incident happened Monday, and military sources are now revealing the dangerous incident, which actually injured a member of the crew.

McClatchy details that a UH-1N Huey helicopter which flew out of Joint Base Andrews — where Marine helicopters which routinely fly members of Congress as well as the president are based (in the president's case, Marine One, as well as Air Force One are housed there) — was on a routine training flight after an unknown individual or individuals fired on it from the ground.

McClatchy describes the following based on airport and security statements:

Officials at Manassas Regional Airport said they received a call at about 12:20 p.m. alerting them that “a military helicopter was inbound and that paramedics were on the way,” said airport operations officer Richard Allabaugh.

A second airport official said the injured Air Force crew member was taken to a local facility for treatment. The helicopter remained at the airport as an investigation was launched into the shooting incident.

The FBI immediately dispatched special agents to the area to investigate after the Huey landed at Manassas Regional Airport.

“The FBI Washington Field Office is working jointly with our law enforcement partners, including the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. One individual in the helicopter sustained a non-threatening injury, for which he was treated and subsequently released from the hospital,” the FBI said in a statement.

Federal agents are also asking for the public's help in identifying who shot at the helicopter.

The type of ammunition used has not been revealed, nor the extent of the crew member's injuries, however they were reported as non-life threatening.

People are ridiculously stupid sometimes! But it's not unheard of.

When I was an instructor pilot flying A-4s in Mississippi back in the '90s we had a jet come back from a low level training sorte with a bullet hole in the wing that was discovered on post-flight inspection.

Houston Police Department had a helicopter crash in May. Pilot died and copilot broke his back.

When officers responded to the crash, they were shot at. Turns out the shooter had also been shooting at the helicopter prior to its crash. The shooter was 19, drunk, and in the country illegally.

You know, it might help in this regard to reveal about where the shooting occurred. There is huge area between Andrews AFB and Manassas, a linear distance of about 30 mi. Perhaps the location is "culturally-sensitive" and it would be "racist" to reveal it?

Most nights, I can usually see from six to ten helicopters overhead where I live inside the Capitol beltway, just north of a straight line between the two locations mentioned above. Most of these appear to be LE or medical, but there are plenty of military birds as well.

Thinking the same thing. Went back and re-read the article thinking I might have missed it.

If a crewman was injured they should know the general location this happened.

The airport is less than 3 miles from my house. Planes and helicopters fly over my house from there a ton. They also occasionally get in C-130s and such. There is a FBI field office basically 2 miles away from the airport as well. I suspect there are a lot of other “governmental” flights in and out of the airport as well. I’ve seen many heavily armed people going in and out of the airport area.

Manassas is a shithole in a lot of places, and it’s getting worse with the new county commission that ended the police/jail relationship with ICE and is basically trying to make it a sanctuary city.

Hopefully the injured air crew recovers. I’m glad everyone else is ok

EDIT: saw on another site that it was fired upon while flying over Middleburg, which is in Loudoun county, west/northwest from Manassas. Middleburg is not between Manassas and Andrews...I wonder if Manassas was just the best diversion point? There are smaller airports closer to Middleburg than Manassas. That area is fairly rural...at least as much as the suburbs around DC get..unlike Manassas, it’s conceivable that someone near Middleburg could have been out shooting

This is very troubling, since the President often travels in that area in Marine helicopters.

Meh, when you do a post flight inspection on an F-14, after a cross-country flight, and find power wire embedded in the vertical stab(s), call me. Big Grin

As seriously as they take laser incidents I would imagine there will be a lot of 3 letter agencies looking into this. Someone is going to get an unwelcome visit at oh dark thirty!

Ag aircraft get shot at with some regularity.

They fly under powerlines, too.

I can't say I've had powerlines embedded in the vertical stab of an F14, but I've had weeds and bushes in C-130 wingtips. Does that count?

If they catch the shooter in the UH-1 incident, between having shot an aircraft, military equipment, and hit someone, the shooter won't be seeing daylight without bars for a long, long time.
