I know we have about every possible occupation represented here on SigForum.

Our county just contracted with the neighboring county for our Medical Examiner position and autopsy services. As part of that, they are looking to hire several people with medical/public safety backgrounds as Medical Examiner Investigators(MEI's) to assist with gathering information from death scenes. They held an informational meeting a couple of weeks ago and in talking with the presenters, I was encouraged to apply for one of them. Got a call to come in for an interview today. It's a rotating on call position, will fit in with the other stuff I do. Plus as I move on towards my 6th decade of life, I'm looking for stuff I can do for part time gigs in partial retirement.

Looking for information from any of you who are currently or previously have worked in this or similar positions. Thanks.

Where I worked in Ohio, the ME investigators were all retired detectives. And in busier counties, it was a full time gig.
Here in the Yoop, the Sheriffs Office has deputies trained as ME investigators and they respond as such when needed.
And good luck on the Interview!

People are basically, "appliances", so I think you got the "trouble shooting" skills to make a go at this...

Good luck. Cool

I don't work in the field, but here are a couple of resources that may be of interest:

American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators: http://www.abmdi.org/

Medicolegal Death Investigator Training Course: http://medschool.slu.edu/mldi/

Good luck!

Long ago, I spent almost eight years as a forensic investigator for a medical examiner's office. I also was cross trained as an autopsy photographer. We liked to say we were CSI, before CSI was cool.

The agency I work for has a contract with one of the major M.E. offices in Minnesota. All the officers are trained as Deputy Coroners. There's not much too it really. We go to a death scene, gather info, follow the check-list, take some photos and then report our findings to the M.E.'s office. Based on what we tell them they make the determination if they want an autopsy or not. We wait for the funeral home to show up and assist with removal then we send a copy of our report and scene photos to the ME's office.

Every so often the M.E. comes to our agency and gives a refresher course and a presentation with interesting cases as tests for us. It's pretty interesting. We're also allowed to attend any autopsy for a case we're involved in, but we generally reserve that for major cases. I've been doing it for 16 years now and find it very intriguing.

If you've got any questions I'd be happy to help!

If I could do this job full time, I would in a heartbeat. I have had offers to go to "big cities" for a full time gig, but I refuse to leave our area.
