Dunno if anybody hear remembers the hoo-hah earlier this year when a former Russian spy/agent and his daughter got a dose of Soviet-era Novichok nerve agent in sleepy Salisbury, England. A couple of weeks later, a dumpster-diver gal died and her swain ws very ill after finding the scent-spray bottle allegedly used to dispense the stuff in the first place.
Mr Putin and the boys went into instant denial about the whole affair, although the two goons held resonsible by the Brits, one a military doctor emplyed by the GRU and his sidekick were quickly identified and named, and became instant TV stars, not only on the UK's widespread CCTV system that placed them in London Heathrow airport arrivals and then Salisbury on the day of the initial attack, but also on the Russian version of the Johnny Carson show.
The late general, according to the rolling headlines here, succumbed to a long-standing and serious [no shit, Sherlock] fatal illness last Wednesday. Probably the fatal illness - lead poisoning? - actually took place last Wednesday.
Public failure and the resultant embarrassent of such magnitude has been rewarded in the time-honoured KGB/NKVD method - an early death by a long-standing but sudden 'illness', the onset of which is easily detectable by a small bang taking place behind the ear. This message has been edited. Putin being ex-KGB certainly adds support to your premise. IMO, opening countries like Russia and China to the wonders of capitalism just introduced a lot of cash to the same types of criminals and megalomaniacs running the show. NATO’s edge in technology is starting to slip away now that these previously somewhat isolated superpowers are flush with cash and still up to their old tricks.

I read the BBC every day so I am familiar with the story. I think Putin doesn’t care what the West thinks - he’ll do what ever he thinks is expedient.

Expedient for his self. As long as he's in charge Russia will be a thorn to the West.

It's a distinct advantage to get away with blatant lying; it shows your enemies fear you.

I hope people don't think that we don't whack people who need being whacked as well.
We're just better at being not so high profile about it.

Before that case, there was this one. Also very clumsy and crude but it still took years to get some evidence to figure out what happened.
