Hi all

I know there are lots of dog lovers on the forum. Im wondering if anyone has a good idea for an as needed externally applied tick repellent. I found a tick on one of my dogs (a hairy one) after we can back from hiking in the woods near the Blue Ridge Parkway a few weeks back. We'll going fairly regularly, but not every week so an edible repellant / tick killer is not what I am looking for yet.

Thanks

JB

If you prefer a collar, Serresto is the best.

If you prefer a monthly topical K9 Advantix Plus gets the best results at our pet store.

Stay away from generics. You won't save money in the long run.

we typically use frontline, the topical stuff you put behind their neck/down their spine.

I'm not impressed with Frontline. My dog had several ticks on her this summer and the black flies are bad. I'm going to switch to K9 Advantix II next. It's supposed to repel ticks, mosquitos, and biting flies. Frontline doesn't repel anything, it just kills ticks and fleas.

Could be a geographical thing to some degree. What works best in some/most regions may not be best for everyone. I would talk to a trusted local veterinarian who sees these type issues on a daily basis and has for years.

I use vet recommended Trifexis and have for the last 10yrs. Before that, I used Revolution for several years. Thing is, neither of those products are recommended for ticks. I asked my local vet about ticks and he said they weren't a big issue around here but if I found them to be a problem, he recommended I use a tick collar like Soresto.

My vet was right, in the 10yrs of using Trifexis (not for ticks), neither of my in town house dogs have had any ticks at all. We do live near/adjacent to wooded areas and even have possums (tick eaters) moving through.

So, my post hasn't helped with a specific tick repellent recommendation other than to say, also speak with your vet about it.

100% correct. As an example Frontline is not effective where we live. K9 Advantix get better results.

Sorresto collars are excellent.

I have large dogs and the collars are just not effective, I use and would recommend k9 advantix. It however is not something you just apply when you go
you need to apply in advance and then repeat on a specific schedule.

Seresto, I have used Frontline and Advantix in the past but have had the best results with Seresto.

It's purely anecdotal, but my dog was having seizures every few weeks when on Frontline. They completely stopped within a month after switching to Bravecto chewable.

I'm fully aware that correlation does not prove causation, but thought I'd pass on my experience.

I've used bio-spot active care to "stripe" the dog during warm weather months. I have no issues. May have to try the K9 Advantix Plus sometime.

Rub the dog down with food grade diatomaceous earth.

Kills ticks, and fleas, and if you have it where the dog sleeps it will also help kill any newly hatched fleas.

I like the orally administered products, like Bravecto, Nexgard, etc. That said, the OP specifically asked for externally applied. Seresto is expensive on the front end, but is very cost effective IF you put the collar on correctly (hint: it isn't worn like a gold rope collar, loose and dainglin', but tight to the neck so the surfaces contact the skin). K9 Advantix has worked very well for years and I find that the resistance is very low vs things like Frontline.

I find that Frontline is wildly variable in efficacy, but in my specific area it isn't as effective any more.

I’m old school. Back when I worked in the field, collars were ineffective and could cause chemical burns. That is no longer the case?
I use frontline spray; still works on our area.

Of all the Frontline products, the spray still works best. However, if you miss a spot with the spray it doesn't extend past where it was applied very well-doesn't have the additional agents required to spread. But if you have it, it'll work.

Another vote for K9 Advantix II.

We have used it on our German Shepherd dog’s for years without issue.

Bravecto. We’ve used it on the last three Scottish Terriers we’ve had (our current one is problem-free).
