Many forget his cameo as the blind monk in Young Frankenstein.

Peaceful slumber sir.

Found mummified.

Daily Mail

Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found partially-mummified at the couple's $3.3 million mansion, with pills strewn in their bathroom.

An arrest warrant obtained by DailyMail.com revealed Arakawa, 64, was found decomposed with bloating on her face and mummification in her hands and feet.

Sheriffs said Hackman was found to have the same signs of decomposition as his wife.

Two maintenance workers called Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler discovered the bodies of Arakawa and her retired Hollywood star husband at their luxurious million Santa Fe mansion Wednesday at 1:46pm Mountain Time.

The last headline I read said the couple were found in separate rooms and there were no obvious signs of foul play.

Everyone remembers the big films, but here are some recommendations of Hackman films which don't come immediately to mind:

  • The Gypsy Moths - 1969 - With Burt Lancaster, directed by John Frankenheimer

  • Scarecrow - 1973 - With Al Pacino. Hackman cited this as his favorite film role

  • The Conversation - 1974 - Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, with the great John Cazale

  • Night Moves - 1975 - A neo-noir detective film directed by Arthur Penn. A real sleeper and a favorite film of mine.

TCM airs all these films on occasion.

He was great in that performance. RIP Gene and wife.

Sad. 95 is a good run though.

I was really bummed when my wife told me about this. Hackman was my favorite actor, by far. This is like when I heard that Elvis had died. Very, very sad.

RIP Gene. Thanks for the years.

If the Daily mail article above is true, the story is getting weirder, but the Epstein thing was still pretty stupid. What's described in the article does not sound like the obvious initial speculation of CO poisoning.

No more mention of this stupid Epstein shit. If necessary, I will make "Epstein" a trigger word and prohibit any and all discussion of the matter, permanently.

Think before you post. I've said this countless times.

What struck me most about Hackman was that even though he was not a classic leading-man as far as looks, he could steal a scene, command the screen, no matter who else was there with him. He did it with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in Bonnie & Clyde, with Denzel Washington in Crimson Tide, and with Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris in Unforgiven. Gigantic screen presence.

I don't know when he said it, but I read that Hackman said The Conversation was his favorite role.

Another lesser known role I like was as Herod, the antagonist in The Quick and The Dead. It was as if director Sam Raimi told Hackman to channel Little Bill from Unforgiven but dial it up to 11.

Under Suspicion is a solid thriller that plays out like a stage play, most of the action occurring in one room. Hackman and Freeman are great and Monica Bellucci is perfect. Great ending.

Sorry to hear about Hackman along w/ his wife and dog. I’ve always liked him… A Bridge Too Far, Hoosiers, Uncommon Valor, and I can’t believe no one has mentioned yet, The Package. One of my faves.

Lord I hate the news media. Just how would a search warrant show signs of carbon monoxide?

A friend and used to joke that it was a SAG rule in the 80's and 90's that either Gene Hackman or Micael Caine had to be in your movie. (Though we always enjoyed seeing both of them)

Curious about this... looks like they've been dead for weeks. More from the same article:

Mummification occurs when a person's skin and tissues are preserved after their death. While most associate it with ancient Egyptians wrapping the corpses of pharaohs in bandages, it can also be achieved if a body is left in a place with cold, dry air where bacteria struggles to grow. Santa Fe is known to enjoy such a climate during winter.

Two maintenance workers called Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler discovered the bodies of Arakawa and her retired Hollywood star husband at their luxurious million Santa Fe mansion Wednesday at 1:46pm Mountain Time.

The identities of Hackman and Arakawa were not released for nearly 12 hours, with details of how the couple were found now offering a possible explanation for the delay.

Begay and Kesler told investigators they hadn't seen them for two weeks. Both appear to have been dead for some time.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Another good Gene Hackman film was “Under Fire” with Nick Nolte and Joanna Cassidy
