They mainly do criminal tax fraud, an example is shown below. The CI Agents pose as buyers of businesses that are for sale. The agent's goal is to get the business seller to produce the real books, which show a higher income than the tax return. Willfully filing a false tax return is a federal felony. While this article states that the agents discovered the fraud "almost by accident" the IRS uses this technique regularly. https://www.upi.com/Archives/1...t-was/2639588225600/ For more examples of the type of cases see the link below. Lots of money laundering and Medicare cases. https://www.pressreleasepoint....021%20more%20rows%20 The CI Agents are not accountants, they are sworn LE. Their web site says there are now about 2,000 CI Agents world wide. ---------------------------------------------------- Dances with Crabgrass

I’ll add my two cents. Until he died, my best friend was a Senior Criminal Investigator for the IRS. The office he worked in does counter narcoterrorist money trafficking. I know of one thing he worked on - seizing a brand spanking new Gulfstream from one of the Mexican cartels. Yes, he was armed. He got his start going after motorcycle criminal organizations’ ill gotten gains. In that world it paid to carry. I think the optic here is that a "government" entity that is viewed as an accounting/collection agency was given the ability to hire 87,000 people and is recruiting applicants with one of their "major duties" listed as "carry a firearm and be willing to use deadly force, if necessary" while the "government" is attempting to disarm its citizens. ____________________________________________________________ Money may not buy happiness...but it will certainly buy a better brand of misery A man should acknowledge his losses just as gracefully as he celebrates his victories Remember, in politics it's not who you know...it's what you know about who you know

This goes to prove if you make it sound dire enough and post it on social media, people will panic over it. And like, click and share. Which drives advertising dollars. And it always starts with “have you seen this......” People need to accept the media is never your friend.

They work with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Years ago when I was a LEO assigned to a regional vehicle theft task force, I was assisted by an IRS criminal investigative agent on several cases involving multi-million dollar car theft rings, mostly run by illegal aliens. We'd execute search and arrest warrants on residences that were used as "Chop Shops" and along with all the stolen cars and car parts recovered, we'd find all kinds of banking records showing where the money was. Hundreds of thousands of dollars per account, with millions of dollars of ill gotten gains each year and ZERO evidence showing these offenders ever worked legally. Since these were mostly property crimes (there were cars taken at gunpoint, but usually contracted by an unidentified third party suspect), so getting out of jail on bail wasn't a big deal for these suspects. Deportation after conviction was a minor bump on their road to riches. They'd utilize the money they had stashed to get out, relocate, reestablish their operation elsewhere under another name, and continue targeting middle class car owners that usually had more of their earnings devoted to personal transportation that virtually anything else. The IRS agent that I worked with, had authority to seize or simply freeze the assets these offenders had pending a court disposition that would usually include RESTITUTION to victims as well as a limited amount of prison time. It wasn't just those who had their cars stolen that were victims in these cases. These suspects bought salvaged cars for their IDs and disguised stolen vehicles for resale and rebuilt stripped/damaged salvaged vehicles for resale to innocent/third party purchasers, victimizing them too. While the IRS agent wasn't involved in the more risky aspects of these cases (such as making initial entry of the location to be searched), they were subject to intimidation and threats by the cartels involved. I absolutely supported her mission as she supported mine and we made a significant impact on the vehicle theft problem in our area as a result. I am the original poster. Posted because I was not aware that IRS used the armed criteria in recruitment and was surprised. I thought that the IRS would call on the FBI or other armed officers, should that need arise. This thread has been an education for me—-thanks. No quarter .308/.223

I think it was around 1986-87 when I was managing a business. An IRS agent appeared at the front door to "speak" with the owner, and showed me an ID and left me his "business" card. He was going by an alias (according to the owner, who had dealings with him previously), and he was carrying a .38 OWB. Weighed about 325, and I suspect was probably a bouncer in his off hours--or an accountant ;-) NRA Member _____________ Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. As you noted in your original post, that requirement is in the job description specifically for IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agents, who are federal LEOs (GS-1811 series). But that's a very small, specialized subset of the overall IRS workforce. Most IRS employees - even those referred to as "IRS Agents" - are not Criminal Investigation Special Agents, are not LEOs, and don't carry a gun or make arrests. For example, as of last year there were around 82,000 IRS employees in total, with just 3000 of these total IRS employees working for the Criminal Investigation division. Among those 3000 who work for IRS-CI in 2021, only about 2000 were armed federal agents, with the other 1k being support staff. Therefore, only ~2.5% of total IRS employees are armed federal agents who investigate crimes and make arrests. Roughly 2000 out of 82,000. Out of a US population of 330,000,000 people, a couple thousand LEOs investigating tax-related crimes is kind of a given (and pretty necessary, considering how just about every criminal enterprise in the country is involved in tax fraud/evasion to one extent or another).

But but, I read it on the internet that 87,000 newly hired agents are "militarized", ready and willing to use deadly force on us average Joes. Q

I know, dude... Facebook says there's an army of tens of thousands of IRS SWAT agents planning to round up all the gun owners, put them in FEMA camps, and melt down all their confiscated guns using lead smelters that they seized through asset forfeiture. Luckily, that same post included a link that will teach me One Weird Trick to prevent Federal LEOs from creating joinder with me, once I divest myself of my corporate shell identity and declare myself a free traveler. So I should be good. ()

In my first year as a boot cop in NC, I was detailed to assis the NC Dept of Revenue. In the first week of Dec we went with these sworn officers to collect the debt (taxes) that people had failed to turn into the state for their drug dealing. You can read that as , they had already pled guilty to X amount of dealing and the state wanted their silver. I imagine this is the same with the IRS sworn agents. I’m certain that 87,000 new hires are not going to be sworn officers. And the advertisement you have seen is for probably less than 3% of these said new hires-over a decade. Like any other red-blooded American, I think that trying to make my tax-debt lesser (by their rules) is the American way. If there is a lawful way to reduce your debt then by all means take advantage of it. But I think the media bias is trying to make you think otherwise. And yes, I hate the IRS-frankly I think the dot gov should only collect a 5% flat tax and they should be restricted to that and that ONLY. Debit spending should be ended, and a balanced budget should only feed the Constitutionally enumerated requirements in the Constitution.
