It has the "rechargable" battery sticks, that I don't really understand. Mine will not recharge. Is it shot?
What kind of life should it have?

Streamlight has replacement batteries and chargers. My SL is 10+ years old. I have replaced the battery twice. You might also check the connection between the charger body and cord.
SWPS is my go-to vendor for Streamlight stuff.
