I thought about it for a while and responded:

1 - Never vote for a democrat.
2 - Never vote for a tax increase.

I think those two are rock solid. Does anyone have anything else they would like to add?

Vote NO on all ballot propositions. ALL OF THEM.

These things are the job for the legislature.

For God sakes “For the children!!” Is NEVER for the Children.

ALWAYS VOTE. Vote in every election you can state/local/federal.

Be informed. Don’t vote just because somebody told you so or some person is famous etc. be informed, be educated.

Remember that 99.25% of politicians give the rest a bad name.

Nothing is free. Somebody, somewhere is paying for it. It might not be you today but it will tomorrow.

Don’t forget the long game. You may want to vote for somebody who you may not be able to stand to get judges on benches. Politicians come and go.....judges can change things for generations.

If their last name is Clinton never vote for them. I mean MAYBE if it was Jesus Christ Clinton......maybe not.

If he is of college age and in college, I'd recommend he seek out the local chapter of College Republicans. I was VERY fortunate that my first vote for President was for Ronald Reagan to oust that nutjob (2nd worst president in history) James Carter. I thoroughly enjoyed participating in the College Republicans.

Possible Rule #4:
Unless it would split the Demoshit vote, no matter the 3rd Party candidate (Libertarian), DO NOT under any circumstances cast a vote for said candidate unless the Republican candidate is the anti-Christ himself.

"Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil... Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel." - Isaiah 5:20,24

That pretty much covers it!

Possible number 3 - If you think you might really like the democrat candidate in a race, refer to Rule #1. Smile

Having reached a ripe old age, I disagree. Shugart's advice is only sound in state and national elections. On very rare occasions, there are democrats who might be a good choice in local elections. When faced with a RINO and a genuinely conservative old school demo, he might be a better choice. Notice I said might.

I believe it was Clare Wolf who said this country is at the ackward age, where its too late to change things within the system and too early to shoot the bastards. Is that still true and if so, for how much longer?

For Non-partisan positions, look at who is listed as endorsing them.

The same goes for Referendums and other choices where R and D are not apparent.

When we lived in King County Washington, I used Ron Sims as my bell weather.
He liked to put his Endosement on issues he agreed with, so he made my research easy.
Big time Liberal politician with totally opposing view point to my values.

If Ron was for it, safe to say I was against it and vice-versa.

OK. Say you live in California. The legislature is full of drooling tards.

Say a conservative organization is able to get the signatures, to get something positive for the state, onto the ballot. Shouldn't you vote on ballot propositions, on a case by case basis, since the legislature is fundamentally dysfunctional and no longer represents the people, for the people, by the people?

Did not vote once. I go exactly the government I deserved. Nixon, Watergate, near certain impeachment, unelected President and controversial pardon.
Cured me forever.
Besides, if I don’t vote, I have no right to complain.

Seventh grade social studies class, Mrs. B. I remember it like it was last week. She was short in stature, but big in voice. Very clearly, calmly, and increasingly loudly, she made sure we listened: "Those who do not vote... deserve! the government! THEY GET!!"

May Mrs. B and her words never be forgotten.
Cool

I told my wife and kids, all of whom are clueless politically...

Until further notice... Vote straight "R".
Right down the line.

Only exception is local county elections, some really good guys run as Independent on the county level.

Endeavor to persevere.

5.) NEVER vote for someone based on their name or nickname. FOr example don't vote for Matther "Skeeter" Abbot. Yes, I actually DID do just that one year/ However, in my defense I did try t oesearch the candidates for the position and I was only able to find limited information about two of them, out of 5 people running for the position AND Skeeter was the only republican.

Yes, but CA is a special (and very F’d up) case.
My rules of thumb for CA propositions:
If it involves any new taxes (for any stated purpose) - Hell NO!
If it involves any new or expanded government regulation, commission, bureau, staffing, etc (for any stated purpose) - Hell NO!
If it appears to either roll back or impede any government regulation or tax - read it very, very carefully. If it actually does what they say it does (prop 6 for example), then it is probably a yes. Just be careful.

Unfortunately, Getting rid of almost all of CA government is not going to happen, so the best we can hope for is doing everything we can to starve the beast.

ETA: Your comment is entirely unfair to drooling tards. The CA legislature would be infinitely better than it currently is if it were composed entirely of drooling tards. Mad

Forgive me for butting in - as a foreigner I try very hard to stay out of anything political on all the numerous US-based forums I write on. But as a very interested outsider who has been here a long time, I have just one piece of advice, based on the two gun grabs that have happened here in UK, and the near-misses in the last couple of months.

Voting for ANYBODY who want to lessen the most important freedom of ANY American citizen, that of having the means to defend themselves and their families against aggression, or, in the end, the tyranny of government, by attacking the Second Amendment, is doing that to set the scene for attacking all the others, one through fourteen.....

Taking away the single most important set of words ever written, that makes the USA not only the envy of the Free World, but unique among civilised nations, must be seen a a despicable act carried out against the most basic tenet of the CoUSA.

Here in UK, ALL politicians lie - it's just what they do. The more radical their beliefs the bigger the lies. The more they want to 'get into power' the more untrustworthy they are.

Remember that I'm just a simple guy, and have a simple message to any new voter - I would ask myself, would I trust that man with my life, or that of my family? When the bad things happen, would I give HIM or HER MY own gun, and say, here, YOU take care of me and defend me from all the bad things.

This message has been edited. Last edited by: tacfoley,
